The Old Folks Home

Quote: Thanks Lacy, I will get some. Right now all I have is strawberry yogurt. I just got tired of meds and treatments over and over again. Our land has never had poultry on it till we bought our first birds last year. These new pens have never had anything but cows on this land. We have a lot of wild birds in our trees and tons of squirrels so they are getting something out of the dirt. That is why we packed the sand pretty deep in all the pens!

I just started browsing Valio's site (our largest dairy co-op) when yoghurt was mentioned, and I learned an interesting fact. The number one (in terms of market share) imported cheese in USA comes from Finland. Finlandia Swiss Cheese I believe they call it.

I'll keep repeating this til the day I die, I think.

YOGURT

Get a good plain, unsweetened yogurt that has several strains of beneficial bacteria in it. Keep your birds supplied with it. These bacteria, if in sufficient quantities can kill the coccidiosis.

Sometimes, adult birds won't even try it. I start mine on it when they're in their first week of life. I mix it into their fermented feed or feed it straight. To get it into your adult bird that won't even try it, mix some in their water for the day. If you have several birds in a pen (and who doesn't?) give it to them plain and in small amounts in their feed dish. There only needs to be one bird willing to try. Once once does it, more will, and then they'll all be flinging yogurt everywhere so stand back. You'll be quite amused. There will be yogurt all over their faces, combs, backs... very amusing!

When my birds see a yogurt container, they all pack around my feet so tight I can barely walk.

Yogurt will not cure Cocci. It is a good thing to give them after treatment though.

Cocci is not a bacteria. If the load of cysts is large enough, it kills the chicks by ripping up the intestines and they bleed to death.

I missed this post!

Most do not treat for Cocci correctly and at the effective dose.

All of the chicks need to be treated! Use the 20% cord powder at the rate of 1.5 tsp to 2 tsp per gallon for 5 days. Then lower the dosage to .5tsp per gallon for another 5 days. Give them lots of B vitamins after the treatment and watch them closely. You may need to treat again up to 16 weeks old several times.

It is possible to have an aggressive strain and then Sulmet can be used.
IMHO, Dimethox (Sulfsdimethoxine) is a better Sulfa drug than Sulmet for Cocci and should be first line treatment with an outbreak. Sulmet really only works on 2 of the six strains that affect chickens whereas Dimethox works on 5. Dimethox is also much gentler on the kidneys of the chicken

I have never needed to use anything other than corid. It is very safe and effective too.

No Kidney damage!

If corid did not work, then I would use Dimethox!

Thanks!

You all are chatter boxes..chatter I say.
