The Old Folks Home

trans..that looks great!

SCG..haven't had apple butter in a while. I will only find it on a grocery shelf here. No one makes it that I know of. My grandmother used to make it.
She also made something else. This was in VA back in the 70's...let's see if anyone else has, or does make this.

She used Molasses...I have used honey. Then peanut butter, then some butter..mix together. That's it. No real measurements, just put what you want in the mix. Onto a piece of toast it goes.

Thanks for posting your recipe, too. May try that later this week.

My favorite apple recipes are:

You don't have to purchase their spice mixes to do any of the above, although I adore their baking spice.

Off to bed! Class all day tomorrow.

I make an easy sauce for pork chops or chicken I take a cup of ketchup and add abt. a half cup of marriehino cherry juice and a 1/4 cup of brown sugar and add some apples or pears and some cherries on top and bake. It is really good.

I took a pic of our pens nearly done all the wire is done and we only need to make a couple more gates and I need another tarp to go over the end of the roof wire.

And here is a pic of the dogs that protect our livestock

Chicka, what is the breed of the dog in front of the tree (with the dark face?) It wouldn't be an Anatolian Shepherd, would it? I so want a half Anatolian/half Great Pyranees, with short hair. I might even take two if I found a litter for sale. I don't want a GP because of their long hair and our heat, but I want the trait they have of guarding against hawks. I would go with an AS as we have coyotes, but I don't want them to target our little house dog. I do, however want them to target any dog that doesn't belong here. I'm not asking too much, huh?

89 posts behind but there is no way I am going to try and summarize the subject matter this time! I'd risk winding up in BYC jail!

I really have to chuckle about folks using a recipe for apple butter. Apples, gallon or so of fresh cider, cook it down till your spoon stands up and voila'. Cook in a little cinnamon and/or allspice if you want a little extra flavor and if you must sweeten it more than the cider does, I recommend brown sugar. Cook a few minutes more to blend the additions in, throw the hot apple butter into jars and water bath for 10 minutes and you're done.

Oh, since once it starts to thicken you have to really watch for scorching, if I'm making it on a particularly busy day, I just throw it in the slow cooker and let it go. Takes a lot longer but you don't have to babysit it.
Good thing I did a big batch last year because a lot of the apple trees didn't survive the week of -30F or worse we had this past winter. One of the professional orchards a zone to our south lost 25% or their 20+ year old trees and they were on the news predicting they are going to have about 50% of last years output and they won't even be begin to harvest for another to weeks which is also way late for their early varieties.
