The Old Folks Home

Speaking of silkies.

If anyone has $0.15 cents to spare, I highly recommend buying the book Extraordinary Chickens. It doesn't have a ton of information about raising them but has a lot of amazing pictures.

By the way, why didn't they bring the cent symbol from typewriters to keyboards?
Couldn't resist. Anything that's 15 cents + $3.99 shipping is worth it. Is it a want or a need? You betcha a want.

Actually, back in 1968 there were some incredible riots in St. Louis and a lot of other cities around the country. In fact there were riots all over the country in different cities from the mid-1960s into maybe the early 1970s. They even managed to have one in Portland, OR.

Of course now, with all of the Easterners and Californians in Oregon and Washington, riots and vandalism are much more common in Portland and Seattle. For decades there were protests with very few riots, and now it seems that the protests are thinly veiled excuses to liberate flat screen TVs and designer clothing.

The problem in Ferguson is that the protest is now being overshadowed by those who want to vandalize and possibly loot, and the focus has moved from the original problem - a militarized police force - to vandalism and destruction by individuals who could probably care less about the Brown family and their loss.
Exactly, just an excuse to loot for many. I can assure you, many of them don't even know the Brown name.

Time for Cooking and Carpentry with Felix again. This time it's something I picked up in a Korean fast food restaurant in Beijing. I have no idea what this would be called.

1 part beef
1 part onion
1 part paprika

Slice the paprika, onion and beef. Fry everything in vegetable oil in small batches. Serve with rice out of the frying pan.

Question: When you say "paprika" do you mean like the Hungarian spice pepper? Because that looks more like a green bell pepper sliced up from here to me. It looks wonderful. Any seasonings?

We had nice weather over the weekend, but now it's pouring down again, and it's really windy too. The rain radar is showing over 40 dbZ. I was going to plant a plum tree we bought today, but that will have to wait until tomorrow.

This is by the way sort of cool, all kinds of semi realtime weather info about our capitol area.

Wish we were getting your rain, it got hot here again. But, supposed to cool down again starting tomorrow, a bit at at a time. I love Aug. when the 80 degree weather hits.

Couldn't agree more. The looters aren't even from Ferguson. These people don't want to lose their access to what these stores sell. There's a lot of old people without vehicles that rely on these stores.

The thieves and morons are coming from all other areas of the region. Two arrested were from Kansas City and Dallas.
There's no excuse for looting and Molotov cocktails - ever.
I also don't want to paint all police with a broad brush. Most are very honorable. I certainly would never consider that difficult job. I know several of the police men and women that work my area and I have the utmost respect for them. But, over my life, I've also known those in these small municipalities that I wouldn't trust any farther than I could throw them. As in every walk of life, there are honorable people and dishonest, despicable people.
When I was in my teens and early 20s I was a wrecker driver for a company that contracted with about half of the cities in North County as well as the farthest north district of the city of St. Louis. I worked midnight to 8 and we were the only place open then. I've been to a lot of accidents and police incidents. I've personally witnessed some police make disparaging remarks about ethnicities that had me doubting their objectivity.
The following is not a race issue but one that shows unfairness. I had to tow two vehicles from an accident in Jennings late one night. One was a police car, the other was an MG. There were a lot of witnesses. The MG had been travelling west on West Florissant (the same street with the current rioting). The police car came out from between two buildings with no lights. The MG hit the front of the police car. I don't know if he survived but he was hospitalized. The policeman claimed he had not only headlights but also his red lights on. Everyone at the scene said that wasn't true. Nothing ever came of it.
That said, if there were true transparency, we wouldn't have had to wait for the family to fly in a second forensic scientist to re-autopsy the body. And based on witness testimony from 3 different people and the autopsy the officer should at least be in custody.

Fabulous coffee table book, especially for chicken aficionados.

They can't be stupid. They graduated from places like Berkeley, Stanford, MIT, etc. In fact, I'm a dumb, undereducated redneck when I suggest that inviting the raccoon into the house to hand feed it does not qualify as a sane action.

Higher education doesn't disseminate common sense.

Looks pretty good but yes, we need this to be translated into American. And can the next episode be about carpentry?

Ozexpat, we're all sick. That's why this thread is so funny.

Totally agree and I am not excluding myself from this. I've done some really questionable things that even I roll my eyes at.
