The Old Folks Home

I agree that Rachel Maddow is better than most of the "hucksters" on the "news". I can't watch FOX because even though I like to laugh, I don't find them funny. I think the "reporters" on that show getting misty eyed over how good a false report would be IF IT WERE ONLY TRUE. :/ I have seen the rabid reports from the other side as well. They (just about every "news" channel out there whether they lean left or right) likes to sit pompously in their chairs (stools, couches whatever) and point to the other channels and say what a horrible job the other channels are doing reporting the news. They all say that the other channels are highly biased and wrong. Well, I have yet to see a channel (I haven't seen Al Jazeera America yet) that isn't highly biased/opnionated/wrong for the sake of ratings. It is all because "we" (the viewing public) apparently want our news this way. I think it is more the case of the squeaky wheel and sane people just not listening to any of the "news" channels. This puts us all in a predicament though because now where do you go to get fact checked fairly unbiased news? Maybe Al Jazeera may be the answer, IDK.
BTW, I saw on FB the other day a "poster" comparing Hillary to Hitler. Geez, next election cycle is going to hugely suck....:/

It's always shocking to see how someone you've listened to for years looks. But it's also interesting, how often you can identify someone by their looks after only speaking to them on the phone (for instance if you're selling something online and hand over the goods in person).

Ever see Garrison Keillor? Great voice.

CNN Anchor Suggests Using Water Cannons On Ferguson Protestors

Her co-anchor Errol Barnett’s side-eye is subtle, but piercing.

The attack ads of US politics are scary. I really don't understand what the point of them is. I think you should be elected on your merits, not the shortcomings of your opponent. And the press will dig those out anyway. In my opinion it only makes you look bad to put out an attack ad.

vehve, I couldn't agree more. Like Hillary or hate her, she is NOTHING like Hitler. Neither is President Obama, either of the President Bushs, President Clinton, or any other elected official. There are plenty I can't stand in political office but when someone compares any of them to Hitler I just want to smack 'em up the side of the head. I don't have a ton of hope for the future of American politics but I would like to think we wouldn't vote a Hitler like person into office.

Ever wonder what happens when one gets hit with a rubber bullet?

Warning!

Gross picture alert

This is a pastor of a church in Ferguson that got hit by a rubber bullet.

I was in a car accident and got bruises like that, they though I had internal injuries. Looks to me like those rubber bullets could cause internal injuries.

Stephen Colbert's new slogan coined for Fox. "Fair and Balanced - Great Point if it were True"
It's just a shame that any news source should lean left or right. Just give me the news. I hate all the teasers. My wife's favorite local news station airs news from 4AM to 10AM. Give me a break. The time is filled with teasers. "When we come back, you'll be amazed at the story about Blah Blah Blah."

Just tell me now!!!
The amount of information they deliver in those 6 hours could fill 45 minutes.
National Fox news has teasers like that too but always imply an indictment of Obama. "When we return, hear about Blah Blah Blah, did a decision by the White House exacerbate the problem?"
I don't know, did it? Just tell me the news, not innuendo.

Every election cycle sucks more than the last.

They've apparently been proven to be effective. You hear something enough, you believe it. People buy advertised products. Before the depression, Ipana toothpaste was the most popular. They quit advertising because no one was buying toothpaste. Throughout the depression, Crest continued to advertise. After the depression, everyone bought Crest.

It will never happen, but it would be wonderful if money would be removed from politics. Imagine if the billions spent in vain every year were donated to good causes. None of us really benefit from lobbyists and the influence of political contributions.

My plan. Every candidate gets the same amount of air time paid for by the government and that lasts one week. No outside contributions allowed.

After reading who he is on Wikipedia, I have to say the only thing I recognize of his work is his line in the Honda Rube Goldberg commercial. And I've seen Hercules too at some point as a kid.
We have a weekly radio variety show on NPR called "A Prairie Home Companion" that he narrates. It's excellent and has culminated in a movie of the same name.
It's includes a narrative about a fictional town called Lake Wobegon, Minnesota - "where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average."
It is heavily peppered with Norwegian references.

My best friend from high school lives in Kansas City now. When I lived there I visited with him occasionally. He has been a fan of Rush Limbaugh for a long time. One night we broached on politics. This was early in the campaigns leading to the 2008 presidential election. He blurted out, "I hate Hillary Clinton". I said, "why?" He was dumbfounded and couldn't come up with anything. He apparently didn't think he needed a reason to hate someone.

Quote: Yeah, the teasers are annoying.

That wouldn't be a very good way to do it either. It would mean that the candidate for the Republican party would get just as much air as John Smith of the White Pride and Quilting party. Lobbying should me made illegal in my opinion though, and anonymous donations as well, if those still exist.

Some people say that politicians should have lower salaries, but in my opinion that would lead to lesser minds making decisions. If you're smart enough to make millions in the private sector, what incentive do you have to work in politics if it doesn't pay anything?

I also think that the US could benefit from having more than two real political parties. Important smaller issues often get lost when you have to limit your issues to something everyone in a large party can agree upon.
