The Old Folks Home

Ron, they're a lot closer than New York and San Fransisco. I don't mind a bit of driving either, a month ago we drove 700km in a day just to attend a dog trial.

By the way, can I drive in the States with a European drivers license?
I had heard that you could sometime in the past. But I would verify it. European Drives licenses are awesome.

I looked at my passport photo a while back, it's taken about 3 years ago. Since then, my forehead has gotten about an inch higher...
A friend of mine was one of those fellows who's receding hair line had left him a fringe from ear to ear... He was always wearing baseball caps... Till his fourteen year old daughter bought him what she thought was a cute baseball cap. He wore it to work once... It said... "I am not going bald I am just getting more head" Where upon it disappeared deep into his file cabinet.

Yes, I am in FL. We are looking to purchase a home, or land and put a home. At first glance, it seemed we had some good options, however, after careful investigation it seems our options are ,much more limited than we thought. It used to be illegal here to misrepresent property. Now, not so much, or it's too costly, and time consuming to sue the seller. Too, the county politicos have allowed misrepresentation at times because it lined their pockets.
Don't get me started. I'm being watched.
I think I have to go change legbands or pick suckers off the tomatoes.

Be watchful for areas prone to sinkholes too.

Wow, yeah it cools down fast after dark. I'll trade my nights for desert nights. 85 and humid isn't fun at midnight.

It's a big country too so you'll have to pick and choose where you want to go. Some people want to do New York City, Orlando, Los Angeles, Disney/SeaWorld type of things. Others want to do Yellowstone, Everglades, Yosemite, Denali type stuff. Alaskan can take you to Denali. SCG can take you to Acadia. I can take you to the Ozark National Scenic Riverways and a Cardinal game. http://www.nps.gov/ozar/index.htm
Coming here, definitely avoid summer.

I have never been to Denali. i no longer travel much....I have children. :D

I have been over most of the state of Texas. I love Texas, adore Texas.....if I could just kick out 2/3 of the people that live there, I would move back home. ;)

DH and I are totally frustrated with the house/property hunting.  We did make an appointment to go see one this Saturday, though.  We learned that each, and every listing HAS to be checked on the County Appraisers website.  Example: 10 acres $149,000.00.  Not a bad price for our locale.  Upon further checking, 2 acres are dry, 8 acres are wetlands (swamp).  That's a lot of money for 2 acres.  One of the best ones I read was 28 acres for $400,000.00 - 13 acres high, and dry.  Upon investigating further, the rest of the property was a lake.  Assuming this is a lake they've dug on the property (NEVER ASSUME, right?) a 15 acre lake seems a bit much, but ok you will own a lake.  NOT.  It's not a man made lake, and you don't own it.  Instead of saying lakefront property, or lake access, this idiot is charging for land at the bottom of the lake. Moving along, new home on about 4.5 acres for $190,000, Nice looking home, good amount of property, decent price.  They had not put in the flooring, so you could choose color, and material.  Upon further investigation, they built the home in a flood zone.  It was dry when they started building, so they didn't bother hauling in dirt, or building a stilt home.  When it rained, the home flooded.  They removed the damaged flooring.  They had to.  The next listing was the home next door to that one, was the same price, and in the same condition.  Yes, they still sell swamp land in Florida, and you can own it for the right price.

Not funny to you, but WOW!! :lau and :th

Denali isn't close to much is it?
I haven't traveled much since the kids are grown. Mostly because of the chickens.
Sorry for volunteering you and SCG.

Vehve, I know what you mean. I used to be a great speller and even after falling head first "over the hill" at least I could tell when I spelled something wrong. The last few weeks I can't even tell that. I am using spell check on BYC every day. Sure the big words can be difficult for anyone but I keep missing the small ones too like 'because',' despair ', on and on.

I get so frustrated that I just pick another word I can spell. I'm hoping I just turned stupid rather than worrying about a stroke or something.

No problem, I love being mentioned. :D

I think it is a nine hour drive away.

Yep, I had friends come to Alaska once on a cruise, and were surprised that I didn't want to drive up to Anchorage to see them. I told them, "I love you, but a five hour drive one way, with screaming children, followed by a $200 hotel room, to see you for only four hours, is my idea of hell. Come down and visit me!" They didn't, and they had no kids at the time. Sheesh.

Maybe you haven't been sleeping well? No sleep makes stupid.

Chicka, The Dude, and I need to drive up to see you, SCG. I can't imagine calling temps in the high sixties to low eighties "super hot and nasty!" Better yet, why don't you drive down here (or fly) and see what hot and nasty REALLY feels like? There is no describing the heat here in the middle of summer. That would be fun! We have AC so it wouldn't be unbearable.....I'll even buy you some shorts!

I told you that you were welcome here. I have plenty of room. I'm about 90 minutes from both Portland and Bar Harbor. I enjoy doing the sightseeing thing with people new to the state. Most of the sightseeing is on the coast. A friend who I met on BYC (and have yet to meet in real life) is coming up in about a week. I've "known" her since Dar's first NYD Hatch. She wants to do the lighthouse tour. I'm happy to oblige.

I was really frustrated buying up here, too. I feel you. Anything that was over 5 acres of land had an ancient house on it with a scary looking foundation. Most of those older homes also had the barn attached directly to the house (see also: we have really cold winters). As much as I dislike going out to tend the animals when it's scary-snowing I prefer to not have my house directly attached to the stables. Lastly the older houses have creepy basements. One that I was looking at to buy had a ton of beehive ovens in the basement that heated the house in the winter. They couldn't be removed because they were part of what held the upper floors up, so the basement was pretty much useless for any purpose.

So chicken question? My two hens that just started to lay are in with my younger chicks that won't lay till November and about four young roosters. I was trying to give oyster shell to my hens and since I usually feed treats to the others, they thought it was treats and were eating it up! How do I stop the young ones and roosters from eating too much calcium???

I have a separate feeder for calcium in my coop and the younger girls and the roosters stay away from it. The other girls self-regulate.

Sorry for volunteering you and SCG.

I have ended up doing a lot of things in life because I was volunteered. I have to say I'm really not adventurous enough on my own.
