The Old Folks Home

Sometimes I imagine Alaskans kids running around in shorts and sunglasses and bare feet, playing with a volleyball, with six feet of snow around. At -30 they probably put on a sweater.

Actually yes..... But not the sunglasses.

I have fleece on, and socks, and a thick fluffy blanket, and several of my kids are wearing short sleave shirts and no socks. They often run around barefoot....but I wish they wouldn't run barefoot through the chicken coop. :sick

In the Philippines we have jealously windows. If the wind is strong you might as well turn off the AC.

I just added insulation to the bedroom ceiling. An inch and a half of foil backed foam. It comes in rolls 3/4" thick so I used double. One day I will put real windows in. I can't get double pane here so I would have to ship. That will more than double the price. A 36x36 sliding vinyl window with single pane glass is $120!!

I've never driven so no tickets. When we first moved to this village(45 years ago) - it was among the highest scorers of traffic tickets. Our chief of police made sure all the out of area parking stickers and license plates got ticketed for something . The village residents were ignored. He was later imprisoned for murdering someone's wife (husband didn't want to pay for divorce). They even had a made-for-tv movie about him.

His downfall was the fact that everybody ,with dirt on their hands, dumped cars(stolen & then owner recouped from insurance) in the canal. The canal was so over loaded with motor vehicles that they were sticking out of the water. After many had been pulled out - they found the Cadillac with the murdered wife in the trunk and followed that back to our police chief.

The only good thing that came of his "reign" as police chief was that our village was the safest place around. No petty crimes, no burglaries, no murders- clean as a whistle. He owned the town and kept most of his antics out of the area.

Our little village is mostly surrounded by forest preserves and canals and river etc. Lots of murder victims discovered but murdered elsewhere and dumped here. There IS a difference. When I did my major walking I always feared I would find some body. It's generally the joggers or dog walkers that find them. Once I did find a dead cat in a brown grocery bag but, that was the last time I did any investigating.

I grew up on the beach in Sydney. I would walk the two km to the beach barefoot. From the third week in December until the last week in January (summer vacation) I only wore shoes to church

Sounds like me as a kid, lived pretty close to the beach in Florida. Flip flops, or no shoes. Shoes at school and church.

Alaskan how did you know it was "boy" poop ? dId you catch the perp?

I haven't had a dog since 1989 and yet am always hosing poos off the lawn, flower beds, driveway etc, I'm very certain they aren't "ghost" poops - none of them looked like Cocker poos.

When we first moved to San Diego we settled in a town called Santee. Known for having lots of cows and horses.... Lots of Hells Angles lived here too.... We were always hearing helicopters hovering and bull horns at least once per month. BUT the saying was if they live on your block you can be certain there will be no crime... They take it out of their territory.

Got used to seeing them around till San Diego made a law against flying their colors. Still have quite a few around town not just in Santee. There is a famous bar of theirs called Dumonts in El Cajon... its since been closed. But their club house is about two doors down...

Never driven.... How did you accomplish that?

My grandma got her license when she was twelve years old. To drive her dad to and from work. He wasnt able to switch from driving mules to driving a machine.
