The Old Folks Home

The decrowing surgery has risks, but so does having roosters in my very urban neighborhood.

The vet told me (& research confirmed) that getting the roos decrowed as young as possible works best, and leads to less complications.

Since my boys got done before they even attempted to crow, I hope they are very quiet. The skin where their chest is plucked seems ashy white in the picts, when they came home Saturday, the skin there was much darker?

Insomnia plagues me too at times. I take a hot bath with epson salts, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, orange and clove essential oils and I end up falling asleep every time on the tub to wake up in freezing cold water some hours later.

I need to order some of the eo's I'm out of that I can't source locally.

Oz- were you able to bring your chickens with you to the us? I'd be very interested in your fibromelanistic chickens.

And as for the other question of what happens if you cross a fibromelanistic rooster over "regular" hens, you will get sex linked progeny, with the pullets all displaying various saturation of fibromelanistic traits, the boys however will not, and I hear the female/male ratio is much higher also. Of course that was not my personal experience, but from someone that already did 3 hatches with the same results.

The last 4 muscovy ducks I got recently are older than my first batch, which I know the sex of. It's these new 4 that I just can't decide which are male or female. The guy I got them from said they are 5 months old? I really want a chocolate drake to do sex linked muscovy ducks too... b/c this guessing game of are u a girl or boy is getting quite old.

We're supposed to be heading for a new record high for this date today. 86+ F predicted. Then in the mid 30s by the end of the week. Have to try and finish my winter water plan now.

I am very interested in starting with my own Melanistic birds once I get moved home..... Sumatras are pretty close so I am getting some hatching eggs from a breeder heree. He has landrace Sumatras for want of a better term. He doesnt breed to the SOP he allows them to free range on about eighty acres. I am looking at breeds that are good fliers Not interested in egg layers... I will get enough eggs for my purposes for sure.

But I would like some of those confirmed melanistic genes in the flock in general.

For what its worth to everyone else.... Melanism occurs in all birds and animals too. Its the opposite of Albinoism.

As usual when I am interested in something I look it up big time.... when Greenfire came out with what they called Ayam Cemin I was dumbstruck.... And Whew the price... OMG... but after lurking on the Blackest of the black thread for a while I found out there already were breeders here in the US... So I did a little research.... found out a lot of interesting stuff....

Key in the word Melanistic or melanism

Wow!
What a perfect Halloween meal!

This is the pup and his momma just before the trip home. He sure hadn't forgotten where the dinner comes from! Mom was looking at me like she appreciated the fact that I was taking the last one so she didn't have to deal with them anymore. This was pre-bath.

This is a comparison pic. The other dog is our 12 pound Jack Russel/daschund housedog, Paisley. They are the same size......for now.

He enjoys getting between my feet. I think he feels secure there.

I think Bi:/scuit is going to stick. I wanted something more manly, but the guys all like Biscuit.

Biscuit..... An awesome name.... Easy to holler too. I choose my doggie names so that If I have to project my voice across a field it will be easy to do.
