The Old Folks Home

Perchie, I love your new avatar. Are you or the horse celebrating a birthday - her hat is so festive, and you are so dressed up. Hmmm. maybe a hot date??

My last hot date was in 1989....

NO it was Katees birthday about six years ago... a Co worker made some hats for her kids party and she thought it would be a hoot to make Katee one for her birthday.. its made of remnant fabric folded like a paper hat and hand stitched with two tacks to hold its shape.

And not dressed up ... thats a T shirt... 5x I believe. I had to photo shop out some NOSE prints... lol. ever constant when you have a horse that frisks you for a carrot.

Deb, I like the new avatar.

Welcome to the thread Goose!

Us Europeans tend to frown upon abstinence... Absinthe on the other hand is legal in EU countries, but it's not really all that popular. Maybe the hipsters will discover it soon. I'm not sure what the real hallucinogenic effects of it are, but I think they are greatly exaggerated.

Real absinthe is apparently illegal in the States, because it has a higher thujone content than what the FDA would approve.

as to Brahmas

We have had them in the past, because they do have a good reputation for cold weather.

My kids did like the hens, sweet things that would let the boys cuddle them etc.

However, I just got the heebie jeebies whenever I looked at them, ALL those feathers, ALL that body mass, and not that many eggs, AND the eggs they laid were medium.

Every time I looked at them, I could see my money washing down the drain.

That is one reason I have moved over to the 'egg layer' type of chickens. I like knowing that my money is being used for eggs, not extra fluff.

And yes, my skinny little guys do look at bit colder, but they deal with it.

Thought I'd add my $0.02 even though I only have one brahma - she is not cold hardy at all. She spends her winters languishing in the coop, hates going out of doors, and is generally puffed up and miserable looking for most of the winter (kinda like her mommy). However, my "small" birds - showgirl, banties, leghorns, etc, all pop right out of the coop in the morning - even at 20 below - and come out for breakfast and pecking around.

I wonder if it's the hairy hobbit feet they have getting icy and getting uncomfortable?

She is a pretty good sitter, though. As if I needed more of those.

Hi SCG, when's the new job starting?

I'm not a fan of Brahmas. They look a bit scary to me, and I don't like the feathered legs. I would think they would gather quite a lot of mud...

Probably not for 2 weeks - they have to notify the union/employees of the change in supervisory authority.

Got my office "cleaned out" and most projects given away so I can spend the next 2 weeks in transition - learning about the new program I'll be setting up and seeing how the place runs without me. I told my staff yesterday. I have never heard it that quiet in there. We'll see what the mood is today now that they've had some time to digest it.

Yeah, change can be difficult, especially since you seem to have been a well liked bosslady. Hopefully you'll enjoy your new job as much, and that the new supervisor your old team gets will do well too.

Quote: It's best to house the species of poultry separately if possible. You could also make the feed available at different elevations for mixed flocks.

I only have the layer flock mixed together. The turkey and Chanties and Buckeye's are all in separate pens.
