Here is my two cents worth (for what it's worth). I believe there are bad apples in the bunch that tarnish the good of all the others. I am not saying Officer Wilson or the officer from New York are bad apples themselves but maybe misread a situation or used a bit more force than necessary. Again, I am not saying they are bad cops but might have been taking their position of authority too far (more so in the New York case than the MO case). I think we need to re-think some of our no holds barred attitudes when it comes to force. Public outcry was a big reason many municipalities changed their laws on how they conduct police chases. I think we need to have that "elephant in the room" discussion as a nation as to why some of these incidents are happening. Respecting the police and the extraordinarily hard job they have to do does not preclude analyzing police practices and determining if better training needs to happen. With all that said, I want to make clear that I do respect the police, I cannot imagine just how hard their daily job is and I have never had to defend my life in my line of work even when I was a soldier. On the other hand, I cannot claim to understand what life is like with darker skin. The closest I can come to understanding what it is like is feeling like I have to "overachieve" to get the same recognition as a man because I am a woman. I do recognize that is not the same but maybe a smidgeon similar. This is such a tangled hot mess of a subject and I wish instead of the media inserting their strident opinions from either side of the fence in the middle of the problem they would just report the news (Walter Cronkite must be spinning in his grave right now). We as a nation should not only have the discussion as to why we are disproportionately jailing a portion of our citizens for doing less damage to our society than the idiots on Wall Street did six years ago (and didn't have to go to jail for their actions). Why does the "land of the free" have more people in jail than China? Are our citizens worse people? I do not buy that thought for a second. We also as a nation need to stand up and demand better of our media. They report the news in the way that gets the most ratings. If we refuse to watch "tabloid" news anymore, they will have to change their ways. Demand better through speaking up and using your wallets (money always talks loudest you know) to let the sponsors of the newscasts know how unhappy you are with how the news is being reported. OK I honestly hope this does not offend anyone because it was not meant to and now I relinquish the soap box and go back to being quiet in the corner.
