The Old Folks Home

yes bunny, i am ecologically sensitive. i come from a country that was strangled by invasive species..

I remember reading a story about Australian invasives when I was a kid. If I remember correctly, they originally brought rabbits. With no natural predators, guess what? They bred like rabbits. To kill the rabbits, they imported cats. The cats preferred native birds and their young. To counter the cats, they brought dogs which found seals an easier target to harass. I'm sure that's only part of the story but people really screw things up. Cats are invasive species on all continents. There were even a couple in Antarctica.

CC, one of the latest chapters in the Australian rabbit fiasco involves the deliberate introduction of a couple of extremely contagious and frequently lethal diseases into the feral rabbit population. They have helped to some extent, but of course, rabbit populations can build up resistance, just like anything else. And you get sad situations like one that played out here in Other Pets and Livestock; a girl bought a rabbit as a pet, and it died a few weeks later of Myxomatosis.

Canola oil is a little iffy, healthy but chemically processed kinda like corn syrup. They use hexane to extract the oil, hexane is also used as a glue for shoes leather and roofing and it is a contaminant potentially present in all soy food products also using the technique, which is not regulated by the FDA. Hexanes come from refining crude oil.
