The Old Folks Home

Got the combs and wattles dressed, and the coop closed in. I will redo their combs and wattles late tomorrow afternoon, and make sure they are snug. Yes, I will leave a part of the top open for ventilation. This is just downright seriously nasty cold for this part of Florida.

When we moved onto our 1000 acre sheep farm, we had a summons issued from the pasture protection board to abate the rabbits. It was estimated we had 2 million of them, We had wiped out 1 millionm in 6 weeks with 1080 poison. we then gassed a few hundred thousand by filling in their holes and dropping in a WMD equivalent,

Mixy was a godsend. We were one of the release sites.

Looking back, it was brutal but it really was war. I would be less of a fan of mixy now days.

Other big problems were prickly pear cactus, blackberries, lantana, foxes and of course the dreaded cane toad.

In Texas they use a propane torch called a pear burner and burn the spines off of the prickly pear and the cattle will eat them, goats too I am sure. The pads are also eaten. Iam sure that you can find some recipes.

The leaves are great in a salad and the fruit is delish

The problem was that with no natural bugs or animals that will eat it, they get big. We had aprox 5% (20 acres) covered in the stuff.

After about 10 years of research, the CSIRO released the cactus worm. The results were amazing. Now the plant can be controlled.

In 2008 there were 1,000,000 feral camels in Oz, with an estimated rate of doubling every 8 years. They have culled them back to 300,000.
