The Old Folks Home

CanuckBock quote "Nope, the changing gender is NOT rare...what is rare is people that keep poultry long enough to get old enough for the left ovary to quit and the female to revert to a male because the one ovary ceases to function. Very common, in OLD birds...sadly, not so many keeping birds alive for any length of time...thru choice or the inability to keep them safe from ending their lives prematurely. They want birds to be productive, so once they quit producing eggs...their life ends for many poultry birds, eh.

Yep. My girls have a "retirement home" waiting for them right here when they are done providing my breakfast.
The "rare" part with this one is this hen is barely a year old that appears to be going thru the change. It's ok, she (or he) still has a home. I have room for a freeloader

BTW - I would appreciate knowing what you think of the article I posted the link to.
I learn something new every single day from here.

There are no words for how magnificent a creature he is. Also, look how far away the photographer has to be. LOL

I use the STC-1000 the MH1210 is slighty differnt ecen though it looks similar.

The stc 1000 has seperate heating and cooling circuits (we ignore the cooling) while the MH1210 has the choice of heating or cooling in the menu. The problem with it is that there is an inbuilt delay to protect the cooling circuit even when using it for heating.. This delay causes the temps in the bator to drop further and makes the average temp lower. I use a probe thermometer inside a water wiggler to set the temp when I use a MH1210. For a few bucks more the STC1000 iw a better thermostat for heating
Thanks for that. I think I'll use the 1000 for the incubator and the 1210 for the hatcher.
sorry mate
Thanks, I'm a little numb to it. She's been going down hill so long.

Her daughter, our kids and another couple's daughter grew up together with about 2 years difference between them. My son hung out with the two girls last night.

Is yours a STC-1000 (8 connection points) or a MH1210 (6 points)?

Poor Dobby....

We're getting hit with four different storm systems here in New Mexico. My "snow bone" in my foot went off this morning, so we'll have snow tonight or tomorrow morning and probably lousy cold, cold weather all weekend. The single-combed girls (Pat, Tejae and Lucy) all got smeared with Vaseline on their combs and wattles...not happy campers. Really funny was Lucy who strolled on by while I was doctoring Pat and took a big beakful of Vaseline from the jar.... The face and sound afterwards were priceless. GAK! I'm more worried about Pat because she has a HUGE flop over comb. Seeing poor Dobby makes for extra vigilance. Thank you for posting his misfortune.....

He's doing better today. The swelling has gone down a little more, though they still look gross. He is shaking his head a lot less and crows vigorously in the morning. He's also making his burble noises at me again...I missed that. I let him out of his box this evening and he tried to preen and stretch his wings. He even did a shake and fluff. I put apple cider vinegar in his water. He's back in his box now falling asleep.
