The Old Folks Home

My chickens love tomatoes. And, they love apples from our trees, pretty sure they aren't spitting out the seeds. All of my different flocks have done fine eating these things.

I don't know how I feel about lists like that....

My chickens have busted into my greenhouse and eaten every single tomato plant that I had.....

They said "yum" there was no digestive upset noticed.

They have also gotten into my vegetable garden and eaten a large number of potato plants.... ditto... the chickens were thrilled, not sick, and definitely not dead.
my idiot and soon to be replaced housekeeper left the gate open to the vegetable garden. the carabao ate all my tomato and eggplant foliage first. she did drop an extra wet buffalo chip the next day - mozza, not the housekeeper.

same idiot and soon to be replaced housekeeper left the gate open to the plant nursery and a couple of baby goats destroyed 30 mulberry cuttings that were 3 month in. only little pebbles were evidence of purpetrator

she resigned yesterday effective good friday. just in time to actually have to be a housekeeper when i get there.

Our tulips are usually in bloom right now, they are under two feet of snow right now! Single digits at night for a couple more warming up to the teens, 30s and 40s daytime temps. Perfect weather for the maple sappers, mmm maple syrup!

Last weekend was maple syrup weekend where all the maple houses are open to the public. The sap had just start to run so there wasn't a lot of stuff to look at. It's starting to run good, now, though.

I don't know how I feel about lists like that....

I feel the same way. There's not enough arsenic in apple seeds to do any damage and my chickens have destroyed beans and onions on multiple occasions without ill effect. They've also gotten potato peelings when BF throws them out there, although they don't really enjoy eating them. I do know that mine also don't like traditional citrus like oranges and lemons and it usually ends up in the compost bin, instead.

Didn't read the article but I feed my flock an apple cut up every day along with some corn and BOSS as a treat. Been giving them that for years and never had an issue. They love apple. They also love tomatoes when I toss them out for them.
SCG I wouldn't mind visiting for one weekend to deal with the cold to do maple syrup weekend. Real maple syrup...... :drool

Thanks for the input. I like hearing what "real" chicken people do. I try to take any advice and tweak it to fit my needs. My girls love tomatoes, cantaloupe, cucumbers, watermelon, juicy stuff the best.

I don't post much, but I sure enjoy following along. Thanks for being so informative/entertaining.:frow

Poultry and plants: I have watched my flock as they pick and choose the weeds here. What they eat, I let grow and the others I try to get rid of.

A man aked permission to put a couple of horses in the pasture last spring. Knowing there was only enough grass for a couple of months, I enjoyed their presence and antics, then when they were gone, the grass mowed, a couple of critter dens stomped in, I went out to see which weeds they ate/left. I now know which weeds I will try to eliminate totally. Some I will continue to encourage to grow.

Spring is here again. If we get some more rain for the grass maybe I will have horses to watch again.

Oz, I actually really appreciate my doctor (s). Without exaggeration, I literally would have been dead if my Onc hadn't stepped in and saved me. We are going to be putting our place up for sale and we will be starting to house hunt. We are going to be moving south but hopefully we can find a place that is still not too far from my Onc. I really don't want to give him up.

Potato skins are only poisonous when they have been exposed to the sun and they have turned green. Even then I don't believe they will hurt anything.
