The Old Folks Home

Oh, don't use anything sharp to do that though, my dad once tried to pry a jar open with a chefs knife. A semi detached index finger and 8 stitches later he learned his lesson. And the man was a food journalist at that point, making food and writing about it was his job, so he wasn't a stranger to knives.

I would consider it an omen that the jar isn't meant to be opened. I couldn't stomach jalapenos anyway.

I agree... Glad your dad didnt lose a finger.... Sharp knife slippage aside there is a chance to chip the glass on the rim.

There is another method which could ease opening as long as its not Mayonnaise.... you can warm the jar up a little...

I have used the Whomping technique and it works... So does taking the back of the handle of a butter knife whacked on the rim of the lid in the direction you want it to turn.

There are a few different types of commercially sealed lids here... One is a straight screw on lid It has regular threads on the lid. Then there are the quarter turn types... Thicker metal they have tabs that fit into the glass grooves... Both of those have a plastic seal inside the lid to seal off the product during production and sterilization. Both of those i have difficulty with on occasion.

Then there are canning jar lids... No whapping or womping or prying or punctureing should be done with those. If the screw thread ring is on it a towel will get it started. Then a butter knife gently pried under the seal.... Seal is a one time use for canning though...

So I think it really depends on the tools you have and the type of air seal you need to break.... What ever the case take care.

Or did I read that wrong?

Cute baby pigs. Yes, that one up front is the biggest, would say beefiest, but that won't work with a pig. Will be pretty meaty though.

And, how to open a stuck jar. Haven't tried the poke a hole in the top method. I just get my DH. He can always open a jar if I can't.

Had a pleasant early Mother's Day gift brought by yesterday. My daughter made me a Pitcher! And an egg. She brought flowers that I arranged into that darling pitcher. She also painted the flowers on it.

She also made me a couple of pot holders, just started to crochet.

Happy Mothers Day to all you moms! Happy birthday to all you aging folks! Sincere condolences to those experiencing an anniversary w/Bama...
