The Old Folks Home

Can you tell I am a huge Stephen King fan?

When you come to visit this fall do you want to take a small detour and drive past this? It's less than 90 minutes north of me.

Vehve, as far as spurs go I haven't kept a rooster longer than 2 years but my 2 year old rooster has about half inch spurs and my 1.5 year old rooster just has nubs. That being said, my 5 year old odd andalusian hen has spurs over an inch long.

My wellie is a year old this week, I'd say his spurs are about a half inch. I think their bite and wing beatings can be just as bad for predators as the spurs. His wellie girl next to him is the one who hasn't laid a egg in two months don't know why? :-(

My brownleghorns and glpolish have been laying everyday, and the EEgrs quite regularly.
Wish I knew polish laid so good I would have got more of them, maybe it's cause she is a hatchery bird?

On the spurs thing, just my observation, but I have 2 BOs and one roo is the unquestioned alpha with spurs about 1.5" right at one year old this week. The 2nd roo (same age received with the existing group) is a dominated and abused second and has no spurs... just nubs. May be because he's not allowed to eat (regularly), so I have to hand feed him each morning and leave food up on the window sill by the top roost for him to ensure he gets something to eat daily. The alpha won't even let him down off the roost until just before dark when he goes up on the roost. So could the presence or lack of spurs be influenced by environment? Hmmmmm

A week ago I went into the coop to get the eggs and I had put some chicks in the coop to get them used to all the hens. Well I am still not walking well and I stumbled over a feed pan and nearly fell. My favorite and only Rooster "Handsome" came running in cuz some of the hens went running out of the coop hollering, and he spurred me twice before I knew what had happened! I still have deep scabs on my leg. But now when I go into the coop I run him out with the broom! I love him and he was just doing his job keeping the peace and it was me who caused the ruckus. But he still eats out of my hand! I could not put him in freezer camp.

I could.

He knew it was you, he attacked anyway. Watch him, he'll likely do it again.
