The Old Folks Home

The above was typed while you were posting, I guess.
I will. :) I believe they were doing a couple other cultures. Not sure why. If some object hit him in the head that came flying out of the lawn mower that could have done him in.
I know it broke my heart he was such a sweetie.
Now all I have are our laying hens and they are all pets. lol Spoiled rotten. They won't even eat treats off the ground. :)

Ron thank you so much for your help.

I may be seeing things here but it appears there was a large E-coli infection in the throat. The report went further to show what that E-coli was sensitive to and what it wasn't. It may be that that infection was causing the liver to react and caused the swelling. The E-coli was most likely the actual culprit that killed the bird IMHO...

Thank you Latestarter. All my chickens and other turkey were in that coop and pen. No one else is sick. I will get the Spray Ron suggested and clean the coop. I did call the lab waiting on a call back.

It says that the turkey had round worms, coccidiosis and two types of bacteria in it's throat.

Blackhead is not mentioned and I do not see a cause of death.

I would treat them for worms, give them a monthly two day dose of corid and get some litter life from southland organics and start treating the pens and etc. with it.

No black head is good!

I would call the lab and ask if the bacteria in the throat killed the turkey.

Both of these assessments are correct.

My take: GI tract worms and bacterial infections (E. coli and Proteus likely from poop). No "bad" (ie reportable, concernable) infections like avian influenza or mycobacteria. Actual cause of death appears to be fluid build up in the lungs (edema) causing the bird to be unable to exchange oxygen (breathe). Basically, death by internal drowning. If this was a human my guess would be the Proteus causing acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) leading to death. In humans, ARDS is often seen with the pancreas being inflamed. In your bird the proventriculus was inflamed and necrotic (although not severely). I'm not a veterinarian, nor do I play one on TV, but a quick google search tells me that that's part of the digestive tract near the gizzard which releases digestive enzymes. Sounds like the chicken equivalent of a pancreas to me.

Thank you Scg. Your translation is very helpful and let's me know he was sick.

I called the lab and I am still waiting on the pathologist to call me back. But I am not sure when they will or if they will.

to bad labs don't include a translation for lay people.

Thanks. I've been looking for my next "venture" once the job I'm in is over. Haven't been able to figure out how I can use my "skills" to make an enjoyable job. This gives me some interesting ideas.

What are you waiting on from the lab?

Quote: I called the lab yesterday to ask what the cause of death was on my turkey. The lady put me on hold and asked the lady that had done the tests and she said she would call me back.
They asked me some other questions like were any of my other birds showing signs of being sick and why did I send the turkey to them to begin with.
I told her that my NPIP agent had just been out a week or so prior and that I had fed all the birds the day before and everyone was fine. And the next day he was gone and I did not know or understand why. She asked me who my NPIP agent is and I told her. She said the other woman would call me back. We will be getting a lot of cleaning done today. The tom that died was in another coop than my chickens and my other turkey. I have told the ladies that bought my turkey to treat the birds as a pre-caution.
They were all healthy and still kicking and the Tom died in April.

Besides not getting my stencil lined up for the front door and top window, I don't think I did too badly considering I can barely draw a stick figure. I believe we finish it next week, filling in details, putting borders on it and quilting it. I did almost have a major accident (perhaps I might admit to more than one close call) with my X-acto knife, but crisis was averted at the last minute and all digits remain intact.
This is not exactly my style, it's a little too "country" for me (and I have no idea what the brown thing is on the right), but I'm overall pleased with it.
