The Old Folks Home

Deb I feel a bit spoiled now but the first 40 years I did not have a man around long enough to ask them to do things.
I had to learn how to work on everything with my dad and BIL's teaching me.
I taught my girls how to do many things like change a tire if they have to and check and add fluids in their cars. Also how to do simple home repairs to major repairs.
I am no good at plumbing and electrical. But I can rebuild a 4 barrel carb. lol

and your daughters won't need a man, Unless they WANT one

I have to thank my Army background for being able to do fairly easy electrical repairs. One of the schools I went through was for electrical repair on radar. The basics of those classes do help with electrical wiring for the house. Plumbing is pretty much like electricity just water flow instead of electrons. I think electricity is easier to deal with but it can be more deadly. I know a few things about engines too thanks to the military although I couldn't rebuild a motor to save my life. I can change a flat tire on a deuce and half though. ;)

I helped dad with carbs those dang springs would sproing and disappear down the driveway... I would run and fetch mostly. He could tune a dual carb by ear... Just because he could not from doing it for work. Dad taught me alot of things but he had NO use for home repair. Mom was the one that did most of it.

One year it was gawd aweful hot so mom bought a window air conditioner. She wanted a pass through hole for it on the living room wall so it... she waited and waited for weeks for dad to cut the hole in the wall... Finally she bought a saws all and started it herself... All the while he sat there in his recliner changing channels on the TV... Finally he realized she was serious and got up and finished the job even framed it in.... Loved my dad but sometimes I wanted to slap him upside the head.

My older girls are married and one still has to do all the honey do's. Her hubby is disabled.
Then I have a daughter that does kind of repairs home, auto, electrical, and water. She has more gumption that most men I know. lol
But I told all my kids if you want to learn to drive you have to learn the basics for safe driving and how to check the fluids, change a tire or jump off a car. I told them I never wanted them stranded.

dsqard my sister was in the Air Force she was a crew chief on the flight line. Then she went to work wiring the cease barrel missile system for Raython.
She had to show a boyfriend how to rewire his motorcycle.

My dad had 5 girls and one boy and he had a weak heart. He always made us girls do everything he needed done.
My brother did not want to ever get his hands dirty.

Mom's learning how to do stuff for herself, now. She regaled me with a tale of her tire pressure light turning on today. She overreacted and called roadside assistance, but I'm glad I called and got that added to her insurance.

I can change a flat tire on a deuce and half though.

I can vouch for this.

My parents like to save money.... I think my mom had the worst tires ever.

I remember changing out flat tires what felt like at least once a month. We would then drive to the gas station on the spare, and get the hole fixed.

I remember replacing the tire with a spare that was only partly holding air. we made it to the filling station before the tire was ruined.

My mom also LOVED driving the car until she was running on only fumes.

So many times the car would stall and coast the last twenty feet to the pump.

Every so often she wouldn't quite make it, and I would have to push. Pushing on the flat was fine... But
I was a tiny scrawny little kid, and pushing a station wagon up hill bites!

With all that though.... I remember on my first date ever.. The car
I was driving just barely hit a curb and totally lost air... In a cruddy area of town too! And yep, I popped the trunk, and my spare was as flat as a pancake!

I had pulled into a closed filling station... So there was a pay phone, I had to call MY PARENTS, and they were not home! :hit

I had to call my date's parents... And have them come and rescue us.

No, there was no second date. Of course, to pass the time until we were rescued, I tried to get my date to sing songs with me.... So maybe it was my singing. :idunno

Aww poor Alaskan. That is a sad story.

At least you did get married.

My parents drove on re-treads and drove them till the tred went flying off and then till the tires were flat. Never any money when they needed it.
