On the brighter news front. The Army Corps of Engineers has discovered radioactive lawns at homes at the bottom of the hill from my house.

Kind of a long story but St. Louis was where the first atomic bombs were made and they stored the waste near the airport back during and after WWII.
Coldwater Creek starts there and has been sending radiation to the Missouri River just above its confluence with the Mississippi since that time. Occasionally the creek floods into people's backyards. They then get contaminated. This is the same creek the mink came from that Wal-Mart sent my way when they cut down all the woods to build the store less than 1000 yards from my house as the crow flies.
I'm glad I'm uphill.
Too bad mink can climb hills.

We all have radiation from those bombs--They can date bones because of it. Before the A bombs has no, I thing cesium something and after it is in the bones.

Carbon dating is what they use mostly though, after something dies you can date it pretty accurately by seeing how much C-14 is left.

It saves on both hardware, and electric costs when your yard glows in the dark. No outdoor lighting required. It's easier to tell if your neighbors are home when they glow. It should be a breeze to spot glowing predators.

Oh that is just more frightening than all the hoopla over pollution... You know they didnt have a clue as to what would happen when the first bomb was tested.

I have a controversial take on this.
Imagine me being controversial.

They didn't have a clue. But for the last 30 years or so, they've been trying to bag it up and ship it by train to lesser populated regions of the west like Nevada and Utah.
It's in my backyard but my take is that if a community gained economic prosperity (albeit small) from an enterprise that is later determined to have detrimental effects on the populace, they own it - forever.
None of this - give it to poorer or less populated regions.
You bought it, you own it.
In the future, perhaps people will think twice about embracing dangerous technologies.
You shouldn't be able to pawn it off on someone else.

I read about a Roman Philosophy of leaving the world a better place for the next generation. It is an ancient idea but often not used.

On the subject of weather, I looked at the long range forecast on Accuweather and this may just be one of those El Nino winters when - even in my climate - I can keep pansies blooming, mesclun and spinach producing and sprouting things all winter.
Mosquitos and other nasties will survive though.
