The Old Folks Home

Did you use nitrile gloves and bait with Juicy Fruit gum?

(I think that is what Baba said to use?)

Baba uses fruit stripe gum.
He lives behind a corn/peanut/cotton/rye field.
The mice ate through his screen door. Went under his french doors. Found the bathroom. Chewed through a wicker clothes basket, 5 towels, and ate the fruit stripe gum from his levi jeans pocket balled up.
It is the multi colored gum with the zebra on the label

<opens door peeks in and whispers> Hey, y’all, Wisher sent me to find the old folks home, I’m new in these parts, and I’m sorta lost, I gotta find the home soon cause I am real nervous, I’m scared comin out in public and all, kinda like right before I have to say Worcestershire sauce. So if you don’t mind, can someone show me the way please?

Hi Sally!

It's great to see you here.

I'm retired, so I think I'm old enough to join this group! I've been enjoying chickens since just before my retirement 4 years ago. We moved from a condo in Santa Monica to a small home in a retirement community in Atascadero, CA. We are so lucky! Our little home is perfectly sized for us (at least I think so.... my husband would disagree... he wanted something larger with a fireplace...oh well) and we have enough room and the permission of the organization to have a small flock of chickens!
Our first flock consisted of 2 red stars, and 2 bard rocks. Unfortunately, after one productive year a raccoon went on a killing spree and lopped the heads off of all of them dragging only one out for the rest of it's meal. Very sad day!! Since it was too late to start chicks again we opted for a 'teenage' set: 2 silver-laced wyndots and 2 cokcoo morans. The Wyndotts were 'iffy' layers and mean to the morans who were great layers! We decided to raise 2 chicks the next spring and re-homed the Wyndotts.
The new checks were Red stars again. Then last year we a light Brahma and an Astrolorp. They got along with the older chickens, the Brahma (Socks) becoming the queen of the flock! This year we decided that since we had lost one of the Morons (to what I later found out to be a prolapse) and Big Mama (the other one) is in her 4th year we should get 2 more chicks; a Rock Island Red and a Buff Orpington. Socks was really bossy of the chicks to the point I had to segregate her for a couple of days. She still had her moments until she started to moult! I guess when you are that ugly you can't be the boss any more! By the time she got her feathers back the little girls had learned to stand up for themselves and the flock seems to have settled down.
The only problem now is that we only have 1 chicken laying! It's the Buff. The RIR has not started laying and she is 24 weeks old! Should I be concerned? We do like our eggs, and my husband (the one who wanted the bigger house) doesn't want to be feeding chickens who don't keep up their part of the bargain!
I am going to give them all the benefit of the doubt... Socks and Red (the red Star) just came out of moult. Big Mama is old, and the Astrolorp (Flash) never has been a consistent layer quitting when it got dark last winter. But if we don't see an increased in production by Feb.... we will be looking forward to raising another batch of chicks!!!
Well, I'll be checking in here fairly often.
Carol
