The Old Folks Home

@bruceha2000 Yeah, but you have more layers, I've only ever had 6 girls max, and now there are only 5. I agree on them being slackers though, 36 weeks is a bit late to start laying :p

I'm good, how are you? Roof rails still in their place?

Well that is true, I started with 12, only 9 by May this year and some are real slackers. Clearly you need MORE CHICKENS!

I'm doing OK. Yep the rails are still up there, so far this year they are waiting for a reason to exist. Just had a 6.6 kW solar array put in last week. Surprised it is producing anything at all on the "not even bright enough for a shadow" days. Not much, but some. Supposed to have a fair amount of sun tomorrow

Bunnylady your right. To dark and cold I know I could not live there either. My DH has teased me for several years about moving to Alaska. I told him if bought me a house with central heat and a indoor bathroom with indoor running water I would go. heheehe
Joke's on me now. DH said the RV has all that! Ohhhhhhh noooooo!

Your hubby is one

guy!

We had record heat half a week ago. Today there's 3" of snow on the ground. No yardwork today! Good time to work on the Christmas cards.

That would be 3" more than we have in Vermont and 2.5" more than we have had all year. Really weird to have 50F and no snow in mid December.

Craving a nice thick Ribeye cooked on the grill, and would do it no matter the weather, but they aren't on sale and haven't been for a while... and I can't do $12-13 a pound.

Better be grass fed REAL free range beef for that price!

As to roughing it.... I am happy with no bath for years etc...... But I NEED heat!!!

Could be that the cold keeps the "fragrance" of no bath for years to a manageable level

Oh, whew it is daylight savings time.....

No, no, it is Daylight WASTING time now! Daylight 'saving' time ended last month. Given we now have ~8 months of 'saving' time I think they should just drop the 'saving' part and call that 'standard' time. Or get rid of it all together as it really serves no purpose other than screwing everyone up twice a year. If you want to "time shift" just change the work hours from '9-5' to '8-4' and leave the clocks alone.

What some old time farmers used to do was tie the dead chickens to their necks and make them wear them till they got stinky.
I'm sorry, but I can't imagine how a dog could connect this sort of punitive action with "thou shalt not," any more than catching up with the dog hours after an "accident" and whaling the stuffing out of it could teach it not to hike its leg on the sofa. In horses, we talk about a "three second rule" - if you don't get after the horse within 3 seconds of whatever it was, he won't connect the correction with the infraction. Similarly, rewards must be given promptly after a desired response if you want the animal to understand that he has done what you wanted. Besides, having seen countless dogs roll on things like road kill and dead fish, I wouldn't think a dog would find the aroma of putrefying poultry anywhere near as offensive as his owner would.

I want a tunnel nest setup One hole many hens can access at once. And roll out capabilities.
I am going to build one of these eventually.

Hey... I can dream right?

deb

I have a single hole closed community box (not roll out) and it is not nearly as popular with the girls as the one open box with 2 vertical dividers. Only 2 or 3 of the older hens EVER use the community. The pullets are using the open boxes.

No perchie! Snort is from a piggy, not a chicken!

True. I have a BA that makes ALL kinds of non hen noises including crowing, whistles, squeals etc but I've never heard her snort.

Thanks Scg.
I am a bit worried about the rainbow layers I am getting. They already shipped them wow! That was fast ordered and shipped in the same day. Geesh Dh and I had to run out to get stuff so we will be ready for the chicks when they get here.
I hope I don't get any small fufu chickens, I won't have anywhere to put them.

Got your Mama Heating Pad brooder all set up?

What some old time farmers used to do was tie the dead chickens to their necks and make them wear them till they got stinky.

The first apartment I lived in was across the hall from a couple with a dog that would go out and roll in the most stinky dead stuff it could find. Fish, skunks, ick. And if they washed him? His desire to get stinky again was as strong as his odor.

I am ALL for that! Or how bout we just permanently change the clocks by 1/2 hour (split the difference) and make that the standard, and leave everything else the same... no changing work hours or anything else.

OK for all you snow lovers/haters... We had a winter weather advisory yesterday turn into a winter storm warning last night. I right now have about a foot or more of snow with more coming down. There is also some decent wind so I have a 3' deep drift running the length of the front of my house and across my front patio blocking my front door. The advisory is in effect for another hour then it's supposed to start clearing out. We'll see if it get's updated/changed or stays the same. Last update was ~ 9am this morning.

I'm sure this situation makes SCG and AL very jealous...

Luckily I'm retired so I don't "have" to shovel... I'll let things settle down and maybe do some clearing tomorrow.

I'm well aware of animal attention spans and timely corrections/treats. It's one thing to roll in something and carry the stink... another thing altogether to have something dead and stinking nasty tied to ones neck. I wasn't advocating it... just throwing it out there. Old time farmers having a lot more experience than most of us, wouldn't do something if it didn't work... #Justsayin They weren't as well educated or socially acceptable as we are today.

I was so upset but I only yelled and threw a stick as she was coming back for more and that ran her off. I have not done anything else to them. However when I have to go to the coop for awhile they will not be allowed to follow me out there. I always carry a switch to keep littlebit from jumping on me, and I tap her when I have to get her attention. I do not hit or beat my dogs no matter how mad I get. But I am not beyond a time out if needed they can be put in a kennel. (the kennel is so big that I can fit all three dogs in it).

I saw my great uncle do that to a chicken killing dog, and it got a little more than just stinky.

I think it's more about building up a dislike for chickens, to the point they don't want to go around them.

probably a reason it was used commonly.

I would not suggest this treatment for inside dogs tho!!

Thanks Scg.
