I guess the bedding was still frozen?

It has happened to me.
Getting part of it mucked out is better than none.

Here comes the stupid question.... If the bedding is frozen. Wouldnt a spading fork or pitch fork be a better tool more steel less surface area.

Break it up some and rake out the chunks.

Maybe if you don't have any humidity.
Here the bedding is just like cutting into a frozen lake.
It has been kept moist by the humidity and you would need a stick of dynamite to break it apart.

Those of you that live in cold climates will appreciate this. Today we're supposed to go up to 42! While we have not had a bad winter by any stretch of the imagination, the last few weeks we've been below freezing day and night, causing poop-sickles to occur in the coop. With the thaw today I figured I'd get an opportunity to chisel the stinkers out of there before spring nastiness.

I toss more wood chips on top if it looks really bad.

If it thaws all the way... I have a boy scrape out the poop trays.
