For other ignorant people, I found this:

"Acute" is a measure of the time scale of a disease and is in contrast to "subacute" and "chronic." "Subacute" indicates longer duration or less rapid change. "Chronic" indicates indefinite duration or virtually no change.

I made the mistake of asking BF's mom to do the birds while I went out and enjoyed myself tonight. The birds go to bed around 1830. At 1930 I get a text from her: "one of the guineas we couldn't get into the coop and we chased it down into the gully behind the house."

Great.

I'm 40 minutes from home.

I just spent the last hour chasing the TWO guineas that were out in the dark. Not only does she think chasing a freaked out bird farther from home in the direction of the road is a good idea but she can't count. I realize she was doing the best she could but holy moly.

I had to even call in CrazyNeighborLady on it because BF is working the night shift. CNL helped and we got the birds into the run at least, where they're more protected. There was no way in Hades we were getting those birds into the coop.

What a circus.

You are lucky you have a CrazyNeighborhoodLady- I have a lot of crazies around me but, they are too uppity to even say "Hello," in the many years we have known(seen) each other.

WOW! Crazy @superchemicalgirl , I dread going on vacation, leaving for a week the end of next month. Hate putting the care of my birds in someone else's hands for a week....I'm keeping them confined to coop runs now in preparation.
It's amazing how far a bird can run in the dark, I've had a extra white jersey giant living wild for a month now. You'd think you could catch him at night in the dark sneaking up to where he is roosting, off like a fire cracker, guess he thinks he's a huge white leghorn. Been roosting right next to the house on a couple cement blocks next to our propane tank so I'm sure safe from predators.
I'd fire your 'BF's mom'.

Beer can, I've heard that keeping them confined for a little while helps train them to come to their roosts. Of course, I have a long handled fish net, and treats as a back-up plan too. Hope it helps everything go smoothly while you're away.

While my chickens are totally used to me, they are a little leery of others. Fortunately, I have 2 daughters that have worked alongside me with them enough that they're reliable, if I need them in a pinch.

We would not have anyone to care for any of our livestock when we go away for long weekends. But we have auto feeders and we are setting up auto water that will be continuous flow with hoses connected to floats. Like we have for our cows.
