The Old Folks Home

Turkey girl is feeling much better. She laid an egg today! Her feet are moderately swollen but are much better than where they started out. The worst of her feet (left) still has a pretty swollen pad. It feels like there's a scab inside the pad, which is why it isn't going down, but there's really not much of a scab to pick at on the surface. I'll give it another week or so of antibiotics and then decide to cut or not at that point.

Edited to add the swollen areas between the toes are pretty much gone.

Wowsers, that turkey is taking forever! Have been doing the drugs the entire time? Is that two weeks now?

Ok, here I go trying to catch up;

DEB- If you need tips on the meter, here I am. I love mine, I have the One Touch Verio. Has built in stat memory, range notification and up to 90 days of results. It is almost always free and the cost of the test strips are some of the cheapest.

Glad to hear the chick is doing better, yea!

I love the zoo too (tho I love seeing animals in the wild more). Like I said before my granddaughter has large carnivore keeper as one of her job titles at the Baton Rouge Zoo.

One of the reasons we are hanging on to where we are is the complete impossibility of there ever being any development anywhere near us for a whole pile of reasons, the main one being right up against our property line on 2 sides, the protected wetland and 1000's of acres of state forest land that is against state regulations to sell. Besides, like where Deb is, we are miles and miles from anything, including jobs, and worse than Deb, we are under snow for much of the year. We do have a couple neighbors along our front property line but they are actually on small chunks of land that were actually part of the original 80 acres and we own 66 acres of it. The land all around us just isn't good for much. The near by lake has a cottage on about every square inch but few people live there full time and many of them have been up for sale for years. We are off the end of a dead end road, not within view and of any neighbors (tho one is close enough to be a real pain in the &*%$ at times but might be finally losing his place to the bank for good this time).

Bumblefoot gone bad.
I processed the last three cockerels today and the last one had a nasty abscess in it's keel bone.

Poor thing! I have never seen that before. It must have come from the round roost board in the hutch.

Edited: Glad the turkey is better.

It is very quiet here now without the cockerels.

When I was young, we had a mayor that was pro-zoo, so our local zoo was really nice, and not expensive at all. Later, the new mayor didn't appropriate as much funding for our zoo, so it got run down. The curator, was hired at San Diego zoo, so he moved. It got so bad, they turned it over to a private company. At first, it was nice, but a little pricey. A short time later became outrageously priced, and not well maintained. Remember, we have Busch Gardens here too, and when locals buy a one day ticket, Busch Gardens extends it to a full year pass for no additional charge. At first the zoo refused to lower their prices, or offer a year pass, but they were forced to when people quit going to the zoo, and the media began writing about how they were not able to provide good care for the animals. Now, it has improved some, but we, and all my grandkids have passes to Busch Gardens, so we go there.

Deb, don't forget to snag a little "me time" here, and there. It's important. Caring for others can be very draining. Once in awhile, you are allowed to remind grandma that no one else is beating down the door wanting to take care of her, and you are trying to, so she can just deal with it.

Today I got the bigger coop totally cleaned up, and all the dirt turned. I plan to do the smaller coop next Sunday. I spent about 5 hours on it, and my back was aching enough I really didn't want to tackle the other side today. It sure looked nice when I got done though. I came in aching, wet, and filthy, so headed straight for the shower. Boy did that hot shower feel good. I hate to admit it, but sometimes I feel my age.
