The Old Folks Home

Here in Northern CA we are having our first heat wave. Today was 102 and it will be a bit warmer each day until Saturday. Saturday is forecast to be 103.

So far the Chooks are doing well with shade, water and my misting system.

yep tripple digits slated for tomorrow It was only 90 toda.... Up at my house in the high desert they are talking 105.... much cooler than El Centro. next major city east of us.... There are some who pack up their horses and move them up to the high desert for the summer....

High deserts cool off at night give relief for those VERY hot days. but usually are milder in the long run....

I only hand one hen die last year!

I hope to repeat that this year. Last year we had three heat waves. This year is supposed to be above normal again for temps again.

Stay cool!

I am sure it will fire up again. For what its worth I havent lost one to the heat yet. Cant say it wont happen probably lucky. But Shade is everything even getting a shade cloth OVER the top of existing structures. the silver side out to reflect the heat. What this does is intercept the rays before they hit the coop...

Also making mud puddles for them to walk and even hunker down in. Feet and wattles offer places to get wet and air cool. Hence my preference for wide open deep drinking bowls.

Good news they've downgraded the highest temp from 111*

All chickens accounted for.

Thanks for the information about extreme heat.

some people put out shallow pans of water for chickens to stand it. Cool feet, cooler bird. They suggest the same thing for people during very hot weather. It does work.

I finally got a chance to get my camera out of the moving box over this weekend. There is a really nice rail trail not far from my apartment. Still waiting for the house in Utah to sell and get DH out here. I am hoping he will be able to come out here for a few days for an interview so we can see each other. It's a bit lonely here without him.

Where are you? What? Beautiful photos as usual...

I am hearing that houses are selling quite quickly out here. Hope you get yours sold fast too!

We are also in for warmer weather..but not triple digit. Low 90's will hit us this week.

I like to make puddle for them under the apple and pear trees. It stays wet under there for quite a while. They love it in the heat.
