The Old Folks Home

Scg I am sorry you don't get much sleep. I hope your eye clears up. Hopefully it's just allergies.

It's in the mid 90's here. I have been looking all over trying to find out why my tomatoes are not getting large enough or turning red. Some sites say if it get's to hot to bring them in to ripen.
Anyone have any experience with this?

we used to grow tomatoes in Vegas.... 110-115 degrees in summer.... Bumper crops worth... Though they were in shade from the fence from about 1:00 on. Hottest part of the day starts around 3:00 goes till about 5:00....

Not a gardener so I dont know if its pertinent....

Depending on the type of tomato they take a while to turn and some don't become red at the end. If you're sure you planted red tomatoes and it has been 4 weeks do a soil sample. Have read that less than 50 and more than 85 for a temperature slows it down. You can also prune your tomato plants so they expend more energy on the fruits you have and less on new fruits and foliage.

Thanks Scg. I will wait it out and see what they do. I might try to find a way to give them some afternoon shade.

Ours are doing great. Occasionally we have one with blossom end rot. We picked about a dozen today.
Patience. They will ripen.
Try a few grilled green ones

Quote: Thanks Kluckychik. Mine also are stunted I think. Here are a couple pics of my Cherokee tomato, it also has the dreaded cracks in it.

I have three kinds of tomatoes planted and my Atkinson's are small like the size of a Roma from the grocery store.
We will be having some fried green tomatoes though. We love them fried.

I will try some grilled with some squash when my squash is ready. Thanks.
