The Old Folks Home

Quote: FIgure I"m to this so far that if I keep them slowed down in growth that might help get them to 6 months old. Won't know though until I get there. SOmeone has a project going using true cornish in his crosses. And Chicken State Univeristy started by Fred's HEns is now discussing true cornish. Walt Leonard has awesome birds.

Oh, great - the resident grey squirrel is handicapped! Now I feel sorry for it.

Max the Silkie Roo went to live at HHAndbasket/farmer Lew's place where he can crow to his heart's content. Plus there's a Penelope there (one of the identical BCM/Silkies, sister to my four) which are his favorites. AND a silkie hen.

Anyway, Max used to harass the squirrel, chasing it around and guarding the base of trees where it climbed to get away from him.

The squirrel uses the duck pond as a large water bowl, often sunning itself on a top rail

I was out there futzing with the Skippy filter and some plastic garden fence material to sequester a corner of the pond for hardy aquatic plants.

The squirrel jumped to the pool wall and ran to its favorite drinking spot, which was past where I was working. I was close enough to see it is blind in one eye. One of the Penelopes waited until the squirrel had finished drinking and jumped down to the ground, then she chased it all over the place. Max must have taught her to do that. ;)

I know squirrels are tree rats. I know this. But he's handicapped! Binocular vision is so necessary for good aim in leaping from tree to tree... Life isn't as easy for this critter as it is for its brethren & sistren.

But I'm not gonna feed it.

Catch him and his brethren and sistren and make a stew

A gang of chicks (four) got INSIDE the fence around my small raised bed where I was growing peas, carrots and a watermelon vine.

Was.

They couldn't get out by themselves, so they trampled what they didn't eat.

At least I know they aren't starved for greens. Little adorable bastids.

OMG! I know how that feels. I'm so sorry! I thought I'd let my chickens in my traditional veggie garden last year to eat a few bugs. All they did was dig up the roots of everything I had planted and ruined it all! Oh, well, that is a lesson learned.
I began my little website for my Straw Bale Gardens this week. It is not completely finished yet, but I will put the web address here so that you can take a look at what I have done so far. I hope you all enjoy it. I plan to add a recipe page and a blog as well to document my progress and problems that may arise. I haven't entered it into the search engine yet, so you have to enter the complete web address in order to view it right now. It takes a few days to get it listed in the search engine. It is still a work in progress!
