The Old Folks Home

Quote: So that's a live squid??? I showed my son after the results came through last night and we were trying to determine that.

whether it's live or dead, but if it's alive...that's just not right. I agree with Beer can...that's mean.

Like a cat with a mouse...just kill it already and eat it already. No torturing it.

The reaction is due to the salt hitting the flesh. Frogs legs, that are clearly dead as they are no longer attached to a frog will kick and squirm around if you put salt on them.

As for the baby ones latching on when you swallow them... There is apparently a certain way you have to wrap them up before you pop them in your mouth to avoid that, it can be deadly if they unwrap...

There are 2 dishes I find very disturbing, one is a live cooked fish being eaten, they somehow cook the back end and don't put the head in the oil so the head is still alive and gasping for air as the back end is eaten... the other is a lobster tail sushi where they lop the tail off of a live lobster, split it open and prepare the sushi, then put the rest of the lobster (still alive) in a pile of flowers as a decoration...

I learn something new here every day. I love that!

Disturbing doesn't even cover it for me as far as those two dishes you described.

I have no issues with anyone eating fish/animals etc...but do the deed as quickly and painlessly as possible.
No need for prolonged suffering at the animals expense.

That just is mean.
I've seen them eat small one's whole/live. Can't imagine what it'd be like if it latched on they way down...

That thing is dead!! What they pour on it, makes the nerves move. Oh man, you just made me shiver with the thought of those things moving down my throat like that! Eeek!

"Dead" in this case is sort of relative - "dying" might be a little more accurate. The squid in these cases are butchered bare minutes before serving; no effort is made to "kill" them during the process. In this video, the tentacles have been removed from the body, but to some extent, the reaction is still there:

Going to sound like a stupid question but other then tsc how do you find local grain stores...I googled but only end up with online delivery stuff...is that just a RI thing?

I am lucky that Poulin Feeds (now run by the 3rd generation of the family) has a location 2 towns north of me. Their products are carried at local feed stores as well.

We have had to buy eggs for the first time in about 3 years. I cooked them but I did not want to eat them sigh.

Did that 2 years ago at Christmas. Last year I had pullets (June hatch) that were laying. This year I cut off the "customers" about a month ago. I have 1 dozen eggs in the freezer. Mix each egg (individually) well, but do not beat them to add air. Pour in a silicon cupcake "wrapper" in a cupcake pan. Repeat with the next egg. When frozen, pop them out of the wrapper (the beauty of silicon!) and into a freezer bag. Now I need to freeze some yolks and whites separately. Still have 3 dozen eggs in the fridge. Getting ONE egg per day from 2 hens, don't know how long that will last. The other 10 are moulting or just generally slacking.

But I am NOT going to buy eggs at the store this year. Will have to institute a "chicks every spring" plan and hope I don't end up with dozens upon dozens of "living the good life in the old folks home" non layers in a few years. We are a "no kill" household.

Buddy of mine shared that one, he has better luck with his dogs than with his women. .. :-D
And I do mean as far as loyalty is concerned not anything else :-D

Good morning all! Just in case anyone forgot

If you haven't already. I will be going after work today. DH is home and going to vote this morning.

I did but I live in Vermont so voting for President is just an exercise, it doesn't count. We and other states with a small number of EC votes are "noise". Lots of statewide and local offices to vote for though.
