Crowing
I have had a heck of a time with broodies lately. Two of my younger girls (Pigeon and Popcorn) have been trying to hatch all month. Of course they decided to set in the most popular nest boxes so everyone is trying to lay their eggs on top of them. With muddy feet because it's been raining a lot. Last week I found one poor little chick lying dead under the nest boxes. When I picked it up to dispose of it - it peeped weakly. Didn't move or open it's eyes. I ran inside with it and Maddy and I put it under a heat lamp. I managed to give it a few drops of sugar water. We expected it to die. It was in bad shape. Six hours later and little Miracle was running around the brooder like nothing had happened. The next day I found another squashed into the mud of the run. It was not even recognizable as a chick. I rinsed it off under warm water and it morphed into a squirming indignant chick. I put it in the incubator along with the rest of Popcorn's eggs. It's name is Mudd. Another of the eggs hatched while Mudd was drying out. A little black EE was the next to hatch. It's Maddy's new fave. She named it Blackbird and rocks it to sleep while singing the song "Blackbird" to it. Another egg hatched last night. Whew!
