The Old Folks Home

Very good supply, thank you for asking. I meet the nicest people at the ice cream freezers. I'm surprised how many men are stuffing their carts with ice cream. I always knew women did.

How long does it take you to finish a big thing of ice cream? I bet you don't sit down with a long handled(ice tea) spoon and devour it all in one sitting. P.S.
This isn't meant as a challenge. Sometimes I think I just eat too much

Also, it says it is well maintained, that's a joke. When I bought the place, you couldn't even open the gate for all the weeds, we have at least cleaned the gates out and keep the grass down on the outside of the fence, we haven't tried cleaning out inside the fence yet, but when I move the horses out there and I'm out there every day, I'll hike up there and clean while the horses eat. Just getting the weeds down. I may get a load of mulch delivered and thick mulch the whole thing just to kill the weeds. There is one peony in there that I have seen, and I think there were a few hostas, but the rest is weeds.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to properly take care of this cemetery since obviously the family isn't?

Personally, I would fence it well, do one weed removal out of my pocket, and then fill it with geese. :)

I was thinking a goat.

No..thank goodness. It is so bad. So many homes and cabins being burned, just gone. And, all of that beauty we loved seeing traveling that way. Gone. :(
so sad soo relieved you arent going through it.

One thing about the land.... It recovers .... We have been through two firestorms here in the past seventeen years. Within a year the trees will recover with new growth... and seeds that need fire will germinate.... Its amazing.

Thanks for the info Ron. I will somewhat patiently wait for them to fix the bug. RAID.....LOL

Cyn, sounds like a typical large family situation. Things go smoothly, sort of, until they don't. Then it's chaos, until it all works itself out again. They won't be there forever, so try to enjoy them while you can. Like I said, it's nice to see them come, and it's nice to see them go, but it's sad to see them go too.

It took a lot of self control, and a few days.

BTW I see there is a brand called Turkey Hill (that has been recalled several times over the year) and it makes me think of you know, 'the turkey '

I cleaned out the turkey's nest, there's nothing in there - no shavings, no hay, no eggs, just plywood. And turkey.

There's a nest next to hers that has shavings in it, but no fake eggs, and in the evenings I usually find her over there. Sometimes one of the chickens has laid an egg in it.

I get my 2x4 out, and push her out of the nest. She gets all puffy and irritated, but I'm about 8 feet away at this point, so she doesn't come after me. All she does is shake and collect herself, then immediately turn and jump into the nest with nothing in it. She spends the night there. Rinse and repeat.

She did bite a large round part of my anatomy the other day as I was trying to get eggs laid under the nest boxes. I hurt my knee hiking with Dsqard and try not to bend it unless I have to.

I was thinking a goat.
I thought goat first. ..but then was thinking that they would probably destroy the stones. I also thought sheep....but probably ditto on destruction.

The goose poo should all stay on the ground...so not etch standing stones...and they should be gentle on the stones too...better than chickens or ducks too.

SCG, do NOT bust the body parts!

Nifty posted an update on the image project. Mat, the webmaster was able to get a second server on the compression and is working manually on them. The project was estimated to take 4 months. Mat has it down to 1 month now.

Still, that is a long time! BYC is a huge site

Is there a local historical society? Or local group that manages cemeteries? I would google, or stop by your local town hall or visitor center.

Unfortunately, at least the only one I have ever tried to contact, are CLEARY doing all work on a volenteer basis and have many other things going on.

We finally found a headstone restoration dude. He has been very helpful, and arranged a clean-out crew to come and tear out the MANY trailer loads of thorns and brambles that had taken over.

He is very reasonable. ..but clearly not free..... not sure that is the way you want to go...

Luckily, there are only about 2 headstones in the actual cemetery, and the guy outside the fence. His headstone is new (2012 I believe) so other than some bush hog damage from dad running over the darn thing, the headstone is in good shape. The rest are just fieldstone, so no worry about damage on those. Plus, for as many people as are in there (14 inside the fence) it's not a big area, maybe 10x20? so I think a truck load or 2 of mulch should be able to cover it nicely, then I would like to plant a few more things and make it a little prettier. I will be putting in a different fence, right now it has a 3 foot chain link fence, which I know my horses would take as either a joke or a challenge... so I'll put in at least a 4 foot fence and make the fence a bit bigger to include the other guy so he doesn't get driven over anymore.

From my initial looking around, pretty much everything says that you just have to ask permission of the owner of the land surrounding the cemetery to get access to clean up, seeing as I'm the owner, that doesn't seem to be an issue. I also saw where if you create a family cemetery you have to deed it separately and if you sell, you have to sell the cemetery separate from the land surrounding it... So I wonder who actually owns the cemetery it's self since I don't have a deed to it.... Everything I have found on that one says "ownership unknown".
