Awwww, thank you. Still a work in progress. Every time I think, "there! It's done!" I spot something else that could be improved for the chickens or to make things easier for myself. My goal is to have it as safe, secure and comfortable for them and as Old Fogie friendly for us as possible while I am still able to make it that way. I just want to be sure I will be able to care for my birds in the future for as long as I am able to care for myself. As Alaskan can attest to, that intent has to be planned for if you live in the land of frozen toes.
My final project, hopefully, will be driving a sandpoint (fairly easy on our property)either very near or inside the breezeway with a freeze proof hand pump. No more hauling water in the winter.

chickisoup, that is exactly why I designed my coop, and runs the way I did. I set everything up so it's very easy for me to care for my chickens in my old age, and knowing my health isn't going to get better.

Similar case for me, unfortunately. I also have to take into account that we are hours away from any family (far further for me) and my husband has several years on me (tho the stinker is irritatingly healthy! )

That's great that you both have been able to do that with your coop and run designs.

Mine should have been thought out better. This clay we have is like trying to walk on ice.
I just couldn't get around with my hip going out Iike I needed to.
But it's all good. I still have some wonderful memories and I enjoyed having my birds. I did get to help inspire others to as well.

I am thinking of using our carport for wintering over my pomegranate and avocado tree as well as my elderberry bushes and grape vines. I don't want to plant them because I want to take them with us when dh retires. We hope to find a smaller place either on the water or close to water. So we can enjoy more fishing.
I may have to tape some plastic around the top to the sides to stop the wind from blowing through it. And add some mulch or something around the bottom since the walls meet the ground but wind will still blow through without doing something with it.

I will be getting a satsuma tree this spring but it will also need to be sheltered from frost.

Has anyone done this before or could offer suggestions to help keep the wind out. I may also have to use a heat lamp

We have a large shop that has a small enteranceway with a western exposure that I use to winter over potted elephant ears and cannas.

It never freezes in there, I occasionally water the ones that are still sprouting but other than that,no worries.

I would think that with your location they would be okay with a heat lamp. Are you going to be getting any solar heating through the plastic 'tent' you are putting up?
