The Old Folks Home

Morning all. It's grey and icky outside this morning. At least it's 43 for a temp so not as bad as yesterday when it was in the 20s at this time.

No I don't free range. Way too many predators on the ground and in the air. I would love to give them freedom, especially the OEGB crosses as they are such good foragers but I can't bring myself to take the risk with all the fox and coyotes around not to mention a thriving hawk population. I am considering letting my older birds out to scratch around in the evenings this summer. I told DH that with their egg production dropping off due to age they could earn their keep by eating bugs now. Even then I would have to stand guard over them with my .17 HMR scoped rifle.

That has been my problem with adding other species to my flock. The freaking Marek's virus that I have here. I'm always asking myself if getting turkeys will help build up resistance in my broody hatched chicks, then maybe I should have a few around. Just to give them a fighting chance at survival. The wild birds are a problem. The wild turkeys do come pretty close to our pens at times. I could probably coax them closer by putting out corn for them this winter. Might be worth a try.

Dishwashers. Got one. Our kitchen isn't designed to be appliance friendly since it was an Amish homestead before it became a homestead. I managed to make it work by removing a door to make a spot for my refrigerator and a window to facilitate my stove. We added on a utility room to house my washer and spare stove and that is where my dishwasher went.

The thing with it is, though , is that at this time it is only plumbed to cold water. I usually start the cycle by adding a couple gallons of boiling hot water and skipping the first fill cycle. I do pre-rinse the dishes, hand wash silverware and when I add the soap solution, I add a fourth of a cup of regular bleach to the washer and then run it. The dishes come out clean and sanitized. Hot water is in the future, but for now, it works.

Reflecting on what they're doing to our cattle with the hormone capsule, and feed, it's not good for the cattle. It doesn't stop there. It's not good for the people that eat those cattle. Ever wonder why cancer, ADHD, anger issues, gender confusion, diabetes, etc., are on the rise? A lot of it could be due to what the animals we eat, are eating. How can we get optimum nutrition from animals that are fed crap? Not only that, but things our own bodily systems should be able to deal with, become susceptible to malfunctions, break downs, and inefficiency with the introduction of food sources contaminated this way.

The AU $250 the lady in the video paid for her dishwasher is only about US $190. Of course I don't know that you can BUY one in the USA for $190.

Here you go. You might need a magnifier! i think getting up early today has done me in. I am getting giddy!
Get 2 of them, then you don't need a cabinet to store clean flatware, dishes and glasses once it is run!

with all of the boys home we have to run the full sized dishwasher at least twice a day, AND scrub stuff.
Given your well known aversion to spending money (I mean really, who else waits until their breath freezes in the house to turn the heat on??), I would think that "running the dishwasher" would only entail chasing the boys to the kitchen sink!

From my perspective, what I've witnessed and what I've understood... If you want turkeys, and you have chickens, then get you some turkeys. If you have turkeys and want some chickens, then get some. If you want to keep them together, then do so. I have been to many farms with chickens and turkeys free ranging together and staying in the same coop and run area with no issues whatsoever.

Turkeys "CAN" carry mareks, but it doesn't affect them. Chickens "CAN" carry blackhead, but it doesn't affect them. If you have chickens, and there are wild turkeys about, then your chickens don't carry blackhead. If they did, the wild turkeys would get infected.

Mareks is carried by wild birds, so if there are wild birds where you live, they are as likely to give your chickens mareks as any turkeys you raise.

IMHO, much of the ado that exists regarding many things, is about nothing. If in fact you are unlucky and your turkeys get sick, then you'll know. Start slow.

Just my opinion... :duc:oops:
This is very true!

You never will know if there is a problem at your place or area until you have Turkeys

Those little ones like we have are more than the in cabinet ones!

When I was a kid, someone would say something about a dishwasher to my mother, and she would say, "I have one," and look at me.

When we had this house built, the package had an allowance for appliances. Husband was adamant about not wanting a dishwasher - for years, we had had a deal that I cooked, and he cleaned. Somehow over the years, that has changed . . . apparently he has a dishwasher too, now.:hmm
