The Old Folks Home

Sausage stuffers, donkeys, golf bags....

Yes, I think I am in the right place.

It's so nice to be welcomed into this group I have followed the last several weeks. I am not retired yet either, in fact I figure I'll be working another 15 years, but DH has retired this year. After a layoff in January, he discovered there simply wasn't much work out there for a heavy equipment mechanic in his 60s. He spends most of his time caring for the grass and trees we have fought to keep alive through the drought of the past few years, and many days calls me with a chicken report. Right now I have broody Silkies hatching eggs, so today's call was, "The funny colored one got off the nest to eat and so did another one, and there are six babies in there, did you know that?!" He makes me laugh, and there's a lot to be said for that.

We have 42 acres that was cow pasture for decades. We've been here just over 7 years, trying to make it more human and critter friendly. In the time we've been here we've planted hundreds of trees, and lost many of them to the combination of heat, drought, grasshoppers, and gophers, but some are finally beginning to look like trees and provide a little shade.

Other than the chickens, we have 8 cats, all indoor only, all orphans from the landfill where my office is located. I've only been back into chicken life a little over a year, and have so enjoyed it. There just isn't anything as therapeutic as chicken keeping.
