The Old Folks Home

My love is of a birth as rare
As ‘tis for object strange and high:
It was begotten by Despair
Upon Impossibility.

Redpulletmama-so sorry to hear about your baby being attacked! I learned the hard way not to introduce new ones to older ones in the daytime. The older ones seem to feel they are a threat, and will try to kill them. I lost one of my 2 barred rocks that way. The next time we integrated chicks.....we waited till they were 3 months old...and put them on the new roosts(to them) in with the "big kids"..at night. Then, I sat outside the first morning, to monitor them. If you have to do it on a day off, might be better. The first time worked like a charm. The 2nd time, I was wary of the teenagers, as we had 3 OEGB/PR mix cockerels. I was right. They immediately went out and attacked the babies. It took me 2.5 hours to catch them and the one PR cockerel that thought he was one of them. They are all in the freezer now. My lesson learned.....try really hard not to hatch any more OEGB/PR cockerels.
I hope your baby pulls through.

Poor Duck-Duck. She is in love and miserable. Her love is in the chicken coop and she can't bear to be away from him. He is a rooster, and he will give her the attention she wants (he's tried to breed her several times) but it never seems to satisfy either of them. If I let her out of her pen, she runs, quacking loudly, to the coop to find her love. If he ignores her, she will dance for him, gracefully dipping her head to the left two times, then to the right two times. Then she runs her head and neck straight out in front and squats in a sweet little duck curtsey. She will do this over and over until he tries again. It's sad, really.........

Alas, poor Duck-Duck. Too bad we can't introduce her to Ferdie (I have mentioned my species-confused drake Ferdinand, right?), but I fear he's long gone to that great duck pond in the sky.

Red - Just keep her separate and keep the antibiotic salve on the wound. Make sure there is no "-caine" in it as that is toxic to chickens. Also, make sure flies don't get to the wound. You may want to give her some extra protein and monitor her water intake to make sure she is drinking enough. Roosters are like that sometimes. He may not recognize the baby as a pullet or future hen. Keep them separate until she gets older and is healed.

Linda - That's an easy replacement, Lowe's, $49.98.

Redpulletmama: I am soo sorry for your attack. Roosters can be awful little things. Good luck on her healing.
