The Old Folks Home

I had been with Dh a couple years, when I decided to buy a new mattress. His mattress was at least 15 years old. Of course he protested. I first entertained the thought because it was sunken in where he slept. He had turned the mattress multiple times through the years, so both sides had these sunken in areas. The final straw was when he grabbed wire cutters to cut 2 of the wires poking out on his side, and 1 on my side.

We went to Macy's. They put paper on the beds, so you can test them. He would not cooperate, and wouldn't even lay on a bed to test it. Next, we headed to their mattress outlet center. I had an idea of what I wanted, but didn't want to pay those prices. At the outlet, he still refused to cooperate, so I got us a whole new set up, arranged delivery, and removal of the old stuff. He complained about the new bed, at first. I told him it was too late, he should have been proactive when in the store. He has come to realize, it's not the bed. He simply can't sleep for 8 hours straight anymore, no matter what bed he sleeps on.

Does he need a cpap?

When I started chemo, I bought a twin size mattress, and put it on the living room floor. I could lay there, watch the big screen tv, and sleep as needed. Chemo made me ache a lot, and caused nerve ending damage in my feet. I could sleep, but not a deep sleep, and it's hard to actually rest when going through treatment. Often I would wake up with pain in my feet, which would wake him up. All he had to do was turn over, and it would wake me. Even though I'm done with chemo for now, some of the treatments still make it hard to rest at time. The little mattress is comfortable, and enables us to both get better sleep. When company is coming over, I slide it to one of the back bedrooms, and stash it until they leave. There are still time's I'll fall asleep on the couch, or the recliner, but usually I prefer my little mattress.

Ron, I don't know. I know he wakes up achy after about 6 hours, no matter what mattress he uses.
A fitness band that monitors sleep or a snore app on your phone can give a clue without a sleep study. The app is cool. I records when there is a noise like snoring and you can tell by the noise if it is sleep apnea

He's always snored a little, but not much, and not loud.
It is more stopping breathing and then a gasp as they wake up.

He could have arthritis too of course. I get achy and night too. I do get between 7 and8 hours of sleep a night though

I suspect it's the onset of arthritis. Normally he complains about waking up because of a backache. We have another bed with a new mattress in the guest room. He tried it, and had the same complaint. Everyone else loves the guest room mattress.
back aches can be caused by other things like kidney issues. My Dad had persistent back pain that was finally diagnosed as a dead kidney.

He should get it looked at to find out what is going on. Aside from being miserable, Sleeping less than 6 hours seems to be associated with dementia risk. The thought is that sleeping allows the brain to release toxins and cleanse the brain
