So, here are some of the finishing furnishings :p of the new coop.

The "Chicken Holder," AKA roost bars, plus shots of its construction (loosely based on the one in the Building Coops for Dummies book):

These are details of the blocks cut to hold the two by fours bars level and flat. More stable, according to John, than simply screwing them "inside" the angled side bars.

This is the new waterer, holds 20 gallons. There is a float mechanism in the bottom of the tank where it seats in the red part. The elevation is a couple hundred feet higher than at my home, so it will freeze more often; I didn't want to risk running a water line into the coop for an auto-waterer if I wasn't able to check it early every freezing morning. It could turn into a shallow 10 X 12 pool....

This is the board which will be used to provide a "back wall" to the open-backed ten nest "rollaway" nest box unit.

Glad you're safe from major damage regarding the earthquake and a girl baby to boot! Congrats.

I worked a few hours (with mask and gloves) and am back home to become friends with my bed, again, in the hopes that all I need is another 12 hours of sleep to kick this things butt.

Huge waterer!! I've not sen THAT model before.

Nice roost-- love the supports to make the roost level and very secure.

Thanks.

Between Feta, the goat Bernie bought for us yesterday and Gevrik, the new girl, our female goat census doubled.

Next week we will be buck-less. I have found a guy on the other side of the island who sells dairy goats. I really want at least an F2 (75%) or F3 (88%) dairy goat buck. The F2/F3 part can be a cross of breeds as long as they are dairy breeds.

I need to decide how far I want to go with the goats.

It sounds to me like if you were to establish a decent herd and could sell them at a slightly below market price, you could have a good volume of business, unless, of course, the locals cannot afford them at any price.

and there lies the problem......

There are two markets in the Philippines and the market for "high-end" goats is fairly small.

There is however a market though for cheeses, free range eggs and specialty preserves.

The upwardly mobile are in the cities and have yet to jump on the sustainable living bandwagon.

I am readying myself for the backyard chicken market which I predict will boom with availability.
