The Old Folks Home

@chickadoodles! Sorry to hear about the injured ankle. Feel better soon.

I took the day off from the internet to get things caught up around the house and deal with the aftermath of my truly horrendous hatching. I thought I had 7 chicks hatch out of 12. Turned out to be 6. The little one I assisted out of the shell never did well. It was weak still yesterday morning and having trouble keeping up with the others. Mom was obliging and letting it huddle under her. It seemed bit better at noon yesterday so I thought it was over the hump.

It's been miserable hot here so I have been going out every three hours to check water. Checked the babies and could only count 5. Got feeling really gloomy at that point, Spent 10 minutes combing through litter with my fingers until I found the poor little thing.Don't know what happened but it had been scalped.and was near death. Don't know if they tried to cannibalize it as it was dying or what. I hadn't witnessed any aggression from any of the chicks or hens.

I finally had to euthanize as I didn't want it to suffer any longer.

5 chicks healthy but only 5 out of 18 eggs sux. I'm sure the heat has had something to do with it but I was pretty well bummed all day by it.

Told DH I was happier just hatching in my Brinsea with my 100% hatch rates. So what do we ladies do when we are bummed besides eat a half a gallon of Baskin Robbins? We clean house! At least I do.

Don't feel so bummed today. Chickens are going to be chickens. The 5 remaining chicks are doing well and their mom's are co-brooding which is fun to watch.

I also have a few BO and Welly hens that are holding their weight and one good rooster in that group so I may not cull all, just the ones loosing weight and keep the healthier ones around as pets.

Also noticed that one of our Amish neighbors, the ones I got my bantam cross eggs from, how has Guineas roaming around. I'm thinking fertile eggs and wondering how many I can cram into my incubator, LOL.

I am sorry about the bad hatch...but am a bit excited to see you getting into Guinea hens!

Yeah I'm a bit excited about the prospect of getting something with feathers that isn't going to be keeling over dead every time I look at them,:lau I might not jump in till next spring as I want to get things settled with my flock and get some place for them to roost away from the chickens. We have a big barn that may serve the purpose. But at least I know where I can procure some eggs!
