The Old Folks Home

Quote: Isn't it amazing how the local prices of fuel effect everthything? At $6-- not many people can afford cars , maybe more use bicycles or mopeds??

Quote: In some towns you can't pump your own gas.

Quote: THe kale hhas changed to a less bitter flavor since the couple of frosts. I will plant more next year. ANd skip the other cole crops. THis fall has been very low on rain.

Aprons ... when I was a little girl my mother tried to insist I wear them. I was rather a stubborn and tomboyish girl, and was never talked into it. Old habits die hard. I would rather have spots on my t-shirts than wear aprons, still.

I have to admit aprons are starting to look beneficial, as the constant cleaning of spot on my clothes is so time consuming. . .
Quote: Prayers.

well, I never used to wear aprons but, have noticed "somebody" must wear my tops when I am sleeping. When I wake up I find chocolate stains, spaghetti sauce, etc both hard to get out.

So I switched to my old, really faded denim apron - spots come out much easier. and the more faded it gets, the more character it has.

Arielle, I am not sure that I will find out how the kale tastes. I was working in the garden this afternoon transplanting some strawberries
and the chickens joined me. They had a smorgasbord of kale, turnip greens, romaine lettuce and anything green they could find.
They looked like they were enjoying it so much I couldn't run them off.

I hear you. My chickens ate all the tomatos within jumping range.

My chickens just haven't noticed the last of my kale in the tall dead grasses. I'm HOPING they don't find the last few plants. I just pick a few leaves now and then. I'll definitely grow more plants next year.

I would like to better understand how farm gardens were protected from the chickens . Whish I had paid more attention to the layout at MOnticello all those years ago.

Just like Oz our garden was fenced and if any got in they were shooed out.

its hard to believe that just 150 miles from my home in the Philippines there are more than ten thousand dead from that devastating storm.

it had the force of a type 3 tornado but instead of being 1 mile across it was 300

the storm surge was like a tsunami, many stories high

how could a country with such limited resources prepare for such calamity
