The Old Folks Home

Last night he broke the same rule he broke the first night here.
Boy was I :he
It was no food in your room . Pretty easy I thought. We talked about it the first day and he said he understood.
Woke up this morning to discover the chips missing.
Woke his butt up at 0630 and made him strip the bed, polish the furniture including the inside of the drawer he hid the bag in. Then he took out the trash and I made him vacuum the room.
He was not happy. It was like the Bataan Death March for him up and down the stairs because I kept forgetting to tell him to get things like the battery for the vacuum and a cloth for the pledge. He's doing all the sheets as laundry which is at least 3 loads because I was pissed so he is also doing the mattress pad and comforter.
Then we made breakfast (donuts) and he did the dishes and put the dog toys away.
I told him we were making another loaf of bread to deliver to crazy neighbor lady and todays "selfless" project is making a small baby quilt for a NICU infant. I made him read me the post about the NICU babies so he understands what it means (a little).

Working on getting him out of my house tonight to someone else.
He's been decent all morning and he just got the laptop back just a few minutes ago for an hour provided he also manages his laundry while using the laptop.
He did all the work on this from picking the fabric to cutting to laying out the design (I even made him figure out the pattern and the math on paper) and pinning it. I ran the machine.
I will make him write a note to the recipient.

As the old saying goes, I get along great with kids and old people it's everyone in between that I have problems with.
Good thing you are "old people" now! :D

Sounds like you are doing a fabulous job with him SCG! I don't know that I would have the energy. OK, I KNOW I wouldn't have the energy, I don't even have it to push my DD2 to do more than absolute minimum and she is 23, not mentally challenged and has a college degree. I just don't want to deal with all the pissing and moaning.

Sounds like he is following the "kids need and want rules and structure, even if they think they DON'T want rules and structure" philosophy. He screws up, you kick his azz, he gets the tasks and does them. Plenty of complaining I'm sure but he IS doing them. I know you aren't whacking him with a baseball bat every 10 seconds to get him to do things so whatever "power" you are using is working well. :hugs

Have to agree you have more skills from your own work something severely lacking in his
life, your positive influence may be just want the kid needs most in his life

You mentioned he was born with drugs in his system, was he a NICU baby?

I think IMHO he sounds like a young man who would do very well in a structured home something like 'Bethany', which they had in the town where dh had his practice.

SGC, you don't mention the sister. How is she doing? I have the feeling that she isn't the 'handful' that her brother is.....yet. Am I guessing right?

He did a great job on that quilt. It just tells me that with constant supervision he can accomplish everyday tasks very well. Life will definitely be an uphill climb for that boy but if he has somebody pushing him along he can reach the top and succeed.
