The Old Folks Home

I always liked a poster that a vet had hanging in his office titled 'Why Dogs Are Better Than Kids' that went something like this:

  1. Dogs can be ready to leave the house in 5 seconds flat.
  2. Dogs love nap time.
  3. Dogs don’t need their own cell phone.
  4. Dogs don't care if the peas touched the mashed potatoes.
  5. Dogs can be house trained in 3 months.
  6. Dogs don’t have to have the latest fashions.
  7. Dogs never grow out of being kissed in front of their friends.
  8. Dogs are not embarrassed if you sing in public.
  9. Dogs don’t constantly ask you “Why”.
  10. Dogs don’t ask you for money.
Only the one I saw, #10 was 'you can deal with that teenage pregnancy problem by spaying or neutering.

When I saw the poster, it was back in the 90s when cell phones were just being introduced into the mainstream of the public.

Just found a very broody buff orpington hen sitting on 10 eggs. Eggs are in the microwave becoming dog food. Silly hen will be broke. Geeesh, just what I needed, LOL but she seems thrilled to be in a family way. Little goofball could be used as a poster child for 'this is what a broody hen looks like'. All puffed up, wings out, softly clucking to herself as she waddles around the coop. If she wasn't so darned cute I'd be mad at her.

Dogs are great. You have a rat-nasty day and the second you come through the door it's like you made the sun come up.

We wanted a couple of them for a few weeks but they are in FL and they didn't take the hint.
Perhaps a plane or train ticket ;)

Curious, when I get a broody they lock down in a nest box. If I take them out, "softly clucking" is about the last thing I hear. They are seriously irritable and nasty toward everything.

My Buff O's as a rule have been anything but irritable and nasty. This one went broody on me last summer and I had to break her. She is one of these hens that if you leave two eggs laying in a box for very long she just goes all maternal on them.

Every BO hen that I've had go broody acts about the same. When I took the eggs away from this current broody, she growled at me, looked frantic as her eggs disappeared one by one, but never pecked. When she wouldn't get off the nest, I removed her and put her out with the others. She immediately fluffed herself up, put her wings out and started tuk tuk tukking softly looking for the feeder.

I need to go back out and see if she is back on the nest. I imagine she is and she is going to force me to break out the broody buster cage. Hate doing that with the nights still dipping down in the teens. I just can't let these Buff O's brood eggs, not in good conscience given their history with Marek's.

About the only chili in a can I ever eat is if I'm dying for a chili dog. For some reason, it always has a 'can' taste to me. Which is why I count on hot dogs to drown out that taste, :lau

On a sad note. Just read where Peter Tork of the Monkees passed away at 77. What girl in her early teens wasn't in love with the Monkees in the 60s? RIP Peter. What was that line in the song? If there's a rock and roll heaven then you know they have a H*** of a band!

Little Girl is still on the nest. Looking for the panels to my broody Buster. Silly girl!

My dumbass broodies don't need an egg, they will make weeks long attempts to hatch shavings if I let them.

Yep, Peter was the most talented of the 4.

Made a dutch apple pie had extra apple seasoned and overfilled the crust so cooked them in a skillet little bit of crunch left that with whipped cream and some cheese sprinkled tonight after dinner pie will wait till a day or so later
