The Old Folks Home

Renee and Kathy are always working on something. My crosses are more compact, but I was going for somewhat dark brown eggs and more of them and still be able to process. The hens look good, but the roos were more gangly than I wanted, but then I have only sold them very young and only ket some pullets.

My Crosses dressed out at 3.5 pounds at 12 weeks. They actually had some fat too! They were very tasty. I am sure they would have been 10#plus roosters when full grown. Since the father was a Dorking, they were very compact and had a nice breast shape. Plenty of meat too.

My mix was FBCM and American Game. Maybe is I used a Game roo over a Marans hen I'd get fatter roos. IDK. Lots of people bought hatching eggs and chicks and lots were processed. My Games lay lots of eggs and I'd heard Maranas taste great, but just couldn't bring myself to eat a Marans roo. LOL My husband was supposed to do all the processing, but since he died, I just can't do it like I thought I'd be able to. Maybe I should start with meat birds first since I know they don't do well after a certain age, but I don't know if that would help any. I haven't processed quail since the one time either. I did good and they process fast, but I only have one quail with a name and that we raised like a pet, although she is out with the others.

One of the Roos was A Dorking x Blue Marans. He was Black with 5 toes and feathers on his feet. He was not as big as the other crosses.

I have not cooked that one yet. He did have less black pin feathers then a regular Marans though.

Ok well, I'll raise em and you can process for me. LOL My neighbor's BIL had offered to process for me and I was going to share with him, but he moved out of the area, so that's out. Maybe I can find someone who would take a few for doing it for me. I'm sure eople around here know how to do it, but I'd like to think it's going to be quick and not some crazy kill.

Yes, I kill them quickly. I don't like that part but after that the rest of it is ok.

I helped CapayValleyChick process Delaware Cockerels last summer. We processed 9 that day and had to capture one of them that got out of the pen. It was a fun day all in all.

Guess I need to grow out some cockerels and not pay as much attention to them so I don't get close. My only mixes right now are the ones I'm hoping are going to help with the egg project. All my young birds for that were in the brooder that was attacked. OH.....hmmmm.....I do have a cockerel that I don't think will be part of it, but ....he's so pretty!

Same breeding, but not sure yet. He has a single comb and the others have a pea comb. Thing is the hens have a small single. IDK. I might have to use both and grow out as many chicks as I can then wait to see if my eggs are lavender. So frustrating! The other 2 birds that made it with him are Blue Copper Marans.

I found some eggs that will do just nicely; thanks guys. I usually hatch mine in January (I'm a bit behind) for NYD and then start the process Memorial Day (a day we're both usually off) and finish Columbus Day. We hatch a few times in between January and April, and start the processing based upon size and attitude. Last year we picked the top few jerks each time we'd process, and in 3 or 4 days a new group of top jerks would arise and get put on "the list." I found last year my roosters were overall a nasty group in the bachelor pad - worse so than the years I had them with girls to fight over. But I'd rather they fight amongst themselves than cause mayhem, hate and discontent with the girls.

DD!

We now have two DD's, only one is DiDi, but I think the new DD, goes by Jan? Hope I am right on that. :)

Haven't been on for a while. On my Utah thread, but not to too many other sites on here. I have a son with Spina Bifida. He is in the hospital. That's a good thing. We have been trying to get him to go for a while. He's been just losing so much weight, really sick. Long story short. Got him to go to a dr. Then he got bad enough he went to the ER. They wanted him to stay that night for more tests, he said he would go back the next day..we got him there. They wanted to do a CT on him. He has colitis. Has had for over a month! Pretty bad. His left leg had started to swell while at home. They weren't quite sure about that..thought broken leg..it wasn't. The CT showed, he also had infection in his hip, same side as the swollen leg. And, the CT caught just the bottom of his lungs while scanning his colon. He also had pneumonia. He's been in the hospital since night before last. Two different kinds of anti-biotics. One for the pneumonia, and one for the colitis. Now, his leg was swollen ever more today..plus, blood work showed he has a very high white cell count. No surprise there. It wasn't down at all today. Hoping they can figure out the swollen leg. He is pretty much paralyzed from the waist down. He does have some feeling in his hip and thigh area. He says it hurts at night while laying still. Now, if he can feel that, there is a lot of pain going on there. He has no feeling at all from the knees down. He's in a chair. Used to walk on crutches, but as he got older, the wheelchair helped him be more independent. He gets around pretty good in that thing. He says he feels better, but we know he isn't better. Having an IV in, and giving him back some electrolytes has helped him feel better, and having water in his body sure helps. :) He was pretty dehydrated! Prayers for our Richard please. Thanks!

I'm sorry, Cyn, but seems like he's in good hands. Hopefully he doesn't have a DVT, but if he does, it's very treatable. I'm sure they'll be checking him for that if he has one sided leg swelling/pain plus mobility issues.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for him.
