The Old Folks Home

The house feels empty today. For the first time no dogs to feed or go out. ANd in , and out and in and out! lol I was thinking about where to get a pup and will start the search. Takes me months to find a better than decent dog. Dogs are one thing I am willing to pay good money for. Temperment tested and good hips et al.

All my ROtties were well trained and so worth it. Nothing like calling a dog and it comes even when a car is pulling in the yard. ANd no jumping on people !! Heidi would race over to a person and throw herself on the ground belly up instead, or sit eagerly in front of the person. No one uderstood her sitting-- it was instead of jumping. lol Loved the trainers I worked with, very understanding of the nature of dogs: the good and the bad.

DH was mentioning a friend has corgi pups on the way-- they are a nice show dog line. Just not my cup of tea. Years ago I read Matthew Margolis' book on dog breeds as he wrote in detail about the pros and cons. He was the one that put me onto the Rotties. TIme to dig that book out again.

OBedience
good with kids
protection of house and farm
less than 100 pounds
not less than 40 pounds
no terrier or hound
intelligent and quick to learn

Who has ideas on which breeds fit this profile??

Belgian tervurn and Belgian malinois are great with kids, animals, etc. I think the smartest dog out there. Now they use them as cop dogs allot but traditionally they were the general farm dog for the common man.I had several growing up. Shadow(I was hers) always tried to help the goats deliver, patrolled and defended our Alaskan property, and I dare anyone to touch me or my friends. Us neighborhood kids would pack up and run the river Shadow was always with us,if a different parent wanted to retrieve their kids they had to get my mom to clear it or Shadow would calmly block them.
They have epilepsy in the blood lines so gotta watch for that but otherwise pretty healthy as breeds. The biggest drawback as a whole is they ALWAYS want to be with you and please you.
Ok theres my two cents.
Sorry about your dog it is terrible to loose real friends.

I keep looking at everyone's German Shepherds and think of the 1st dog I remember. Rover. A black lab, German Shepherd mix. Picture a jet black German Shepherd. Myparents got him the year I was born and he died when I was 12. Great watch dog. Smart, looked out for us kids, made unwelcome guests uncomfortable (at 1st, until he was told it was ok) and hunted like a pro. In his 12th year of life 2 neighborhood dogs came on our land. Young dogs. He kicked both of their butts and sent them running home. I say neighborhood inthe country way. The house 1/4 mile up the road
