The Old Folks Home

i plan to help the environment.

i am going to park my car friday night and not leave my bedroom till monday morning.

maybe i will sleep the whole time.

my fave weekend

I need one of those environmental weekends. That sounds nice.

I am hoping to scoot out of work an hour early today so I can take a nap. I've been woken up from work calls most nights this week and have stayed late every night. I am starting to crave brains (turn into a zombie for those of you wondering). I know the odds of my hour actually happening are about 2% but I'm going to try. And that'll keep me going for the day.

We need to process some roos, baaaad. Maybe do that this weekend. After sleeping in.

Quote: LOL-- I'm cutting back on some of my birds- which is really hard, as I like them all. And suddenly I have MORE egg customers-- when he girls are slowing down due to the number of broodies. Where were these buyers when I had eggs coming out my ears!! lol BUt otherwise, I really want to get into buckeyes. I'm not liking the cornish x, so hoping the buckeyes will be meatie enough to make me happy.

Arielle, have you tried the Jersey GIants? I have 4 that I am trying to raise. But they are growing so slow!

I just hatched some JG. I understand they take 2 years to get to fill out properly.

I got them because I want mega chickens free ranging. Our local roos would be lucky to get to 7 pounds.

For true dual purpose I am planning Dorkings Delawares and sussex.

Quote: THey do grow very slow. I would like to know th history of the Jersy Giants as there must be a practical reason for the slow grow. I don't think they will work for me, and here's why.

I have looked at my potential food supplies and have concluded that I need the extras in the freezer by Nov to early December. If I keep stock after that date, then I will definitely have to increase the purchased grains. Bottom line is I'm seeking a meaty bird that can forage. THe cornish cross would be coyote food if I let it free range and it eats so much food. Granted it has a fast conversion rate to meat and I"m trying to experiment with feeding them chopped grass to go with the FF, but they don't seem eagar to eat greens when FF is available; but eat it when only dry pellets available.

What about EO Marraduana Basque and Black Bresse. Both have large roosters and are nice Dual Purpose breeds.

Where native food is regularly avail all year round, I could see JG working out well.
