The Old Folks Home

chickensnewtome, we will be keeping you and your mom and family in our prayers! God Bless!
Thank you so much!
One problem with mixing Ducks with chickens is that the Drake may hurt a hen if he mates her. Drakes have an appendage while Roosters do not.
My Drake did try that with my chickens but after a good peck in the face he has left them alone. No further problems with them. Thankfully I think Wisher1000 has a female duck
Thanks! I will try that.

You and your mom are in my prayers.
Thank you so much!

I really do appreciate the out pouring of support and prayers for my mom.

Is this a common problem when running the two together?
I had one drake that was raised with chicks; his was the only duck egg that hatched that go 'round. He was a mix of Indian Runner/Pekin/Rouen/ Heaven knows what else, and just happened to be white. I named him "Ferdinand" after a character in the movie Babe. If you know the movie, you know that Ferdie was trying to make himself indispensable, like the rooster. The rooster had two jobs, he said: "making eggs with the hens, and waking the farmer up in the morning. I tried it with the hens; it didn't work, so I tried crowing and lo, I discovered my gift!" My Ferdie "tried it with the hens," but fortunately they were faster than he was. I had other ducks at the time, but Ferdie hung out with the chickens. I had to lock him in a pen with a lovely lady duck to get him straightened out, but he did eventually learn that he was a duck, and not a chicken (can't say I ever heard him trying to crow, though).

So I have eggs in the bator, and just put some finishing touches on the brooder I plan to use in the garage. The eggs are on day 8, I started with 23 Araucana, 10 BCM, 2 EE, 12 that SCG was kind enough to egg bomb me with. The first candeling had to toss 8 Araucana and an EE. The BCM's are really hard to see into as everybody already knows...lol. The Brooder is 6'lx2'dx33"h and on wheels. The PVC water should hold about 3 gallons and has 6 nipples. The feeder should hold about 20 lbs of starter crumble, ( I am thinking about changing the pie pan to another piece of PVC with holes drilled in it to keep them from getting in it and scratching). I built a drawer to go under the Hardware cloth on the bottom. I plan to put either sand or kitty litter in it to make it easier to keep clean, just have to use a kitty litter scoop everyday. There is a shelf on the bottom that holds my 3 containers of meal worms I am trying to grow out and will be storage for feed. Please pardon the mess in our garage.

This was before I mounted the water, feeder and drawer.

These two are the after shots.

Very nice. Can you come and make my garage look like your messy garage? You have no idea!

When I was a young lad we were overrun with pekin ducks that would not stop breeding.

When the drakes grew up they started raping chickens. They did not physically harm them with their cork screw but they did end up in therapy for months.

We ended up culling a lot of drakes but once they got a taste for chicken, they had a hard time giving it up.
