The Old Folks Home

What are the odds that you'd meet Kevin's former owner in a random bar? For you, 100%. Me? I'd probably meet Ted Bundy.
Random? You don't know this part of the country. :gig The Pub is the only eating establishment within a ten mile radius open after 3 p.m. seven days a week (11 a.m. to 11 p.m.) and the only place around to drink something alcoholic with a meal other than than wine.... No "hard" spirits, just wine, beer, and ale. I think the next closest place to sit down with a beer about 8 miles away. I've already been warned about who is on Megan's List up here. After observing some of the other regulars, I am mighty glad The Pub doesn't serve hard liquor.

Had an interesting morning that we thought was going to be a quick fix for our son with Spina Bifida, that has a stone in his bladder.   There were complications, and it couldn't be broken up.  So, he goes back in a week to see the dr. and it looks like he's in for some serious surgeries that will keep him in the hospital for weeks.  Poor kid..he goes good for a while, then he's back in that darn hospital.  He had a pretty long stretch of all being good there for a while, then this past Jan. was a doozy, and now.  I think that what they are considering is going to be the best thing for him.  It's going to take several surgeons to work on him on the day it's done.  I'm just hoping he will go for it.   Looks like we will have him around for a while with all that is going on. He will  go home probably day after tomorrow, but I want to be at that Dr. office visit!

I love the photo of that X+X L. egg!  I want a chicken that will lay one on a reg. basis like that.

Wow Cynthia, you are an amazing Lady!

I've worked with Spina-Bifida patients and their families, incredible resolve and determination. My prayers for all involved to include the medical/surgical team. If I may ask, how old is your son? Has he had a lot of surgeries this far? Sounds like he has some independence being in his own home. Please let me know if you can.....keeping him in our thoughts and prayers. Chirp

:clap  Good for you!!!  YOU are the most important influence in their lives.  Oh and roll sheets instead of folding them, saves time. ANd yes kids can roll sheets.  Maybe your kids already do such chores . . . .

From another nurse (RN), how do you "roll" sheets?

My imagination says it something along the line of wrapping it around my forearm, over and over into a ball???? That would take up a lot of room? Do tell your secret...Laundry Goddess, heehee :clap , I hate folding sheets. Pictures??? Thanks, Chirp

So I promised Ya'll some pictures from my trip to Florida to see my mom: Although I am not in ANY of these because I am the picture taker, not the one that likes getting pictures taken!

:thumbsup Great photos. Thank you for sharing.

Ron, how hot is it over there? It was 92 here today and I'm a wuss. All sweaty, wearing BFs roomy boxers instead of actual clothing, got the AC on in the bedroom...

Trying to pressure can some chicken stock right now, which is making the kitchen almost unbearable, but I couldn't wait any longer to can it and I want to save freezer room for the cornish.

My rash of bad luck continues. Fridge went down at work today (that's the story of my life), plus other electronic issues, just got a recent upgrade to the computer system and I spent all day feeling like I was on the phone lines for the IT department. Last night another chicken died also of internal laying, and I've got another one near death that probably won't make it through the night. I'm starting to wonder if it's something I'm doing to cause this. Oh and last night I got home late and was missing a turkey... who we eventually found in the garden on a secret nest. Ever wrestle an angry 25 lb turkey? It's fabulous. I highly recommend it. Dsqard, your birds are the sneakiest, broodiest things. I thought it was the wrong time of year for turkeys to go broody?
Anyway, back to my internal laying fiasco:
Possibilities: too much protein in the food? too fat biddies?
Possibilities that it isn't my fault: Most are Murray McMurray and almost all the same age, although the death last night wasn't a McMurray bird. So far 3 of the 4 leghorns I've had have died of internal laying (starting about 18 months ago and recurring with regularity), and the 4th and final one is well on her way (mentioned above).

This is devastating.

Seems like when it rains, it pours!

Internal layers can be caused by so many things....internal bone/organ structure/placement, food/hydration issues, trauma/injury/tears at vent region, calcium deficiencies.....hereditary/genetics....sad to lose all 4 of the girls. :(

This is from a Necropsy report from an Australorp that died in July:

6/11/2013 – Preliminary report - The cause of death of this chicken was clear after gross examination. Abundant intracoelomic

hemorrhage, particularly over the left hepatic lobe, severe enough to account for the bird ’s sudden death by exsanguination, was

found during necropsy. Large amounts of fat were present in the coelomic cavity. Hepatic rupture associated with internal

bleeding is a syndrome (the so-called “FLHS”) that has been recognized in obese adult laying chickens often (but not always)

associated with fatty livers. Cases are more often seen during the summer. The actual cause for this condition is unknown. In

the coelomic cavity moderate to large amounts of yolk material were detected, this can be due to post mortem rupture of ova or

the result of an actual condition in which yolk material shed in the abdominal cavityis complicated with bacteria causing

secondary egg yolk peritonitis. Histology, PCR and bacteriology tests are pending.

The liver dysfunction causes egg problems that lead to egg yolk peritonitis.

Duck Duck turned 16 weeks this past weekend. How long till I get duck eggs? That is, assuming she is, in fact, a she.

More than likely next spring. Did you see the video of Caramel (the goat, not the sauce) eating the tomato? It has my boy ducks on it making boy duck noises. You should know by now what your duck is. Boys will also start to get the curled butt feather at this age.

I was thinking it needed some thick caramel syrup.......

I have some hickory but I'm not sure that would work with this.

For those waiting for the recipe, I gotta scoot to get breakfast and get to work. If I eat quickly I might be able to post it, but it's a complicated recipe, so it may have to wait until this evening.
