  I actually saw the whole (ick) episode so know all about 42. Incidentally my sister & her family love Big Bang= so that makes up for me hating it a whole lot.

Diva, The Big Bang Theory TV program is actually referencing "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy." It's not original with those characters..... I have never watched it, either.

They probably referenced the answer to the Universe and Everything in the Big Bang Theory, but it is much older. It is from first a Book called:
the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and then a TV Series and Movie of the same name.

You should read the book. It is very silly.
