The Old Folks Home

so I have a question. I went to pet one of my sweet hens that is now laying and she squated so I pet her, she got up ruffled her feathers and my Rooster seen that came over and pecked the FIRE out of me!?!?!?! Why? Does he think i am taking his woman? Will he always be this mean, Should I think about dinner? Oh and on the math subject, as of right now I can figure out a prescription dosage and that is it!! LOL

I can see why he would think you had just mated his hen, that is exactly what happens when they mate. Hen squats, male climbs on, male jumps off, hen gets up and shakes. I think you may need to watch him to see if he starts looking like dinner. Some say holding them will stop it, some say holding them on the ground with his beak in the dirt will stop him. I think once they start being aggressive toward humans, it is likely to get worse. In my experience, nice roosters are always nice, mean roosters were genetically engineered to be mean. Fortunately, the mean ones are easier to process and taste better!

OHHHHHH See I didn't really get how they mated!!!! HAHAHA stupid on my part I know

. Well he hasn't done it again but he also has been watching me very closely. We will see how it goes. My husband thinks it's great " Ya that is his job! mate all his woman while protecting them!! Go big Roo!" (in a foot ball coach voice) So I think dinner is out of the question.

He is a young Rooster? Their hormones are crazy at first and they will be a bit wilder. Many will calm down.

I am surprised that the pullet squatted for you. They usually do not squat for people when there is a rooster.

Cockerels develop a bit slower usually so he may not have really gotten into the swing of the mating thing yet either.

I have had a couple of cockerels that would bite me. Some have gotten better. I just pick them up and carry them around with me for a bit. If they keep it up, I will separate them from the flock for a day and put them into a pet carrier in the garage. Like Wisher said, some stay mean and make great soup....Others do mellow out though.

Yes he thinks you are competition and yes he is potentially dinner. If he comes at you again, grab him and carry him around upside down. If you ever have children around your chickens you may want to go ahead and eat him as he might learn to leave you alone but he will never be safe around children.

oh he is very young ron, just now started crowing. But we have 3 other roosters and he is top rooster. I think he just seen a threat. My girls have always squatted for me. They are sweet and I hand raised them all. I have not physically seen him mate any of them but we cracked an egg the other day that had a blood spot in it. He hates to be picked up so I think I might try that. Other wise I will be needing some recipes no matter what the hubby says. My 2 yr old loves to play with the chickens, the minute I see any kind of anger against her he is for sure gone. Thanks ya'll!

A blood spot is not a sign of fertiltiy.

Here is a bullseye image you see with fertile eggs

Then what the crap is the blood spots? We had one egg that was full of blood? Are my girls sick?

A blood spot is a piece of the reproductive track that gets into the egg during it's trip the egg shell organ. It is harmless and cooks out. Some chickens are more prone to having them and a lot of Heritage breeds will have spots.

I take them out if I am making a cake.
