The Old Folks Home

I love that setup! It is really nice (and really clean). Your chickens look much happier than mine.

Awww, thank you

The greenhouse has really made a difference this winter with all the crazy cold we have had. It can be below zero outside but if the sun is shining even a little it can get so warm in there I have toopen the top vents. It also allows the girls a place to dust but the cold has been so severe at night that I have had to take the spade fork to the dust holes a couple times to break the ground up. It has NEVER done that before!

not once have the girls ventured out in the yard since November!!! Normal years they would be running up to the house, hop up on the woodbox under the kitchen window (where it is sunny and protected from the wind) and peek in the window at me trying to get me to come out and give them treats.

Some great ideas there, thank you for posting. I never thought to open the cabinets to keep the pipes warm! I usually wrap what I can in towels to keep them warm(ish). We have two wood stoves, and a propane grill outside and this year we got a wood fired smoker so we can pretty much cook anything we want to. We have baked bread and a pie on the propane grill before and it was pretty good. We may have to do that tomorrow if we lose power. I'm too bushed tonight to make bread.

That is too funny. Most of our birds have hunkered down under or in the coop, with exception of the turkeys who just trudge through the foot+ of snow we have out there, not caring.

I have a turtle sandbox, which I filled with a mixture of sand and ash from the various stoves we have for the girls to dustbathe in. They love it, and it's protected from water getting into it, so it doesn't freeze solid (as long as you remember to put the top on whenever precipitation is predicted) like the ground does or turn into inches of mud in the spring. Not sure if you have mud season too, but I'd bet you do.

if i venture over 16000ft i better take an ice scraper - and it looks like some chilly nights..............................

I've been told a lot of things but I don't necessarily believe them.

I was born and raised on the east coast, and have been through all the east coast states and I have never once been in Ohio.

Perhaps they were confused that their canals were the ocean.
