The Old Folks Home

Ok Hagar3, you asked..this isn't even the half of them, but here goes a picture overload! You can tell the difference..lol... I know the names too! This is myself with Shelby. Most of these photos were taken a long time ago. Stepnaie I'm holding Gavin, one of our daughters is holding Gabe. Sabrina and Paige.. Gabe This little guy was born early, came home as bright as could be and soo lovey...little Zack This is Malachi..his mama is the one that is expecting again..they will be 2 years apart. Morgan and Paige I have to find a chicken related one..or two. Quentin .. holding a poor little chick.. Zeke and Gabe Zeke, with a chicken on his head..not really.. :) A daughter and her son, our grand son Colton feeding the chickens grass. Two grandsons from this last Christmas party. Jayden and Skyler I could go on, but that's enough. :p
That is some gorgeous grandchildren. We have 7 grandchildren. The youngest is 8. She is the owner of the chickens. I am the caretaker. Her older sister just had our first great grandchild. That made her an aunt which puzzles her. She has also had some serious talks about the baby not taking her place as the baby and thus the most spoiled. The oldest is 26.

i will trade these two for a breeding trio of your choice

Hi, I thought I'd put my 2 cents in on the breed types that I like. I really have a lot of favorites as far as laying hens in general, so this is my top 3 favorites, in order. Also, I will put why I like them as opposed to other breeds. This is just from my experience.

#1. Large Fowl Cochin's of any color except white. This is my favorite breed of all the egg layers that I have owned for many years. They are very good layers and make great mothers and broody hens. They are easy to sex at a young age and they are tolerant of other breeds. They do not eat as much as some other large breeds that I have owned. They are friendly. I like the feathered feet, and fluffy feathers as they keep the birds feet warm in the winter. I could probably go on and on about this breed, but these are the main reasons I like them.

#2. Black Australorp's are great because of their medium body size and feed efficiency. They lay a large egg and it gets extra large in the second year. The eggs I got from them were huge compared to their body size. Friendly, easy keeps.

#3. Faverolle's are also super layers. They lay all year long, with the exception of moulting and extreme heat. They are friendly and good foragers.

I wish I could keep more breeds, but I have downsized to one LF breed and I am happy with them.
I can't wait until you post what breeds you have chosen. There are so many great breeds!
Thank you BunnyMomma I appreciate the helpful info! I have a few Australorps and I do love them they are very sweet I do not know anything about Cochins or Faverolles I will look into those breeds. I know if I get all the turkey I want we will be building more pens.... ha ha ha ha my hubby did not want to build anything else last year but this is a new year... lol

Am I the only one who looks at the photo of SCG's driveway and sees curvy slices of vanilla ice cream cake? Maybe I've been shoveling too many mountains of snow myself.

bunnymomma or bunny lady--- I have a rabbit that has flipped his water bowel one too many times. Is there a way to attach water bowl safely for a rabbit?? ( He doesn't like the water bottle method.)

Well, still no vehicle for me. Kinda hard for me to compel someone to drive me hither and yon on my schedule. Fooey, huh? Maybe this weekend... I do have a prospect though. Hopefully I can get a ride to go check it out before somebody else buys it. :barnie On the home & chicken front, I have been enjoying how Sparkle my House Silkie is raising those two chicks in the house. My flock mama hens have brought chicks to me before - which makes me feel so proud - but it's been more like showing them off, with a touch of "Food Lady, don't be afraid of her" than what Sparkle appears to be doing. She always hops up begging for treats when I go into or return from the kitchen, and has actually called the chicks TO swarm round my feet awaiting goodies. :love
