I have a dumb question.

How do I know or is there a set age when my chicks will not need the heat bulb? I have raised it b/c I noticed they dont sit under it. Just on the outside edge of the light. Is there a certain temperature at night that I need to look for?

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this

If they are still sitting just barely outside the heat source, they still want some. They will go away from it completely when they don't need it any longer, and, it makes a difference if they are indoors or out. If they aren't fully feathered yet, and are outdoors, and it's cold where you are, they will need some heat. Hope this helps. :)

there is nothing worse than a dumb question

fortunately there is not a dumb question

The birds need supplemental heat until they feather out.

A good rule is one week for every 5F difference ambient is from 95F, lowering the lamp temp each week - or raising the lamp. observe behaviour with adjustments.

Well the girls are locked up and all is set. -40 tonight and tomorrows high should be about -5. Lol gotta love the Rockies.
I hope it does not stay that cold there for long for your sake! I have a heat lamp in my coop and it is no where near as cold here. I guess my birds like the heat and the red bulb because they are laying alot more eggs. YEA!

The weather should break on Sunday. Then back up to the +30-40 range. This winter has been a wierd one, one week up then the next cold.
It's been the same here just not as cold as you have it. But for central Alabama 17* is very cold which is what is was in the last two artic fronts.

I think everywhere is getting odd weather. Up here we are used to cold snaps so we build for it. We actually used to get more/longer cold. It's the warm spells that are new for us. It makes me want more.lol
