The Old Folks Home

1.......... My mother was so freaked out (and to her defense, it was scary) she made my father drive back to Salt Lake, go to the highway department and have them find a route home that wasn't so scary. They did it.

2...........My first real attempt to deal with arachnophobia was when we bought our current house. The cellar was literally solid spider webs. If there was one spider egg sac there were tens if not hundreds of thousands. The previous owner had never gone into the cellar. It was virtually empty except for the spiders and spider webs so resembled the cellar in the movie. I knew I had to eradicate them. I took two days off of work wore long sleeve coveralls, taped the cuffs to my boots, sleeves to my gloves, collar around my neck and put on a bandana. There was little uncovered skin or hair. I took a shop vac down there and sucked up everything I could. It took two whole days to get rid of everything. I have to repeat every couple years.

3...............When I was a kid, it seemed like every time my mother would go to the bathroom at night she'd see a spider. She'd wake my dad from a sound sleep to kill it. He'd sleepily walk into the bathroom. Not seeing anything, he'd stomp and swipe his feet on the floor to satisfy her as she'd sit in bed to hear the deed. After a while, it always sounded exactly the same and at exactly the same amount of time from walking into the bathroom. She eventually demanded to see evidence which he could never provide.

4...............Why am I so screwed up?

5...............Brown recluse still make me wary. A workplace friend's son was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs. During training camp, a brown recluse had gotten into his equipment. It bit him on the bicep. Halfway through practice he collapsed. They thought he was overcome by heat and sent him home. He passed out in his apartment and was found by his girlfriend. They got him to the hospital but he ended up having severe necrosis of his bicep and never played football again.

6................Yes, they do have their place. Even non-poisonous spiders can leave a nasty bite. I was on a 3 day 45 mile canoe trip on the St. Francois river and there were times the overgrowth covered the river. There were always spiders dropping into the canoe. I had several big swells where I had been bitten.
1 - You must have had an interesting childhood!

2, 3, 5, 6 - If you went into that cellar, at all, you didn't have aracnaphobia. All these stories combined successfully creeped me out and had me wiping imaginary cobwebs and crawly things off my arms, legs, and face. Thanks.

............... I was too busy being afraid of my mother and her mercurial moods.

FSG fan?

Quote: Wow! My oldest grandson had the night terrors! Those are very difficult to deal with! I have never heard of anyone else that had to deal with them.

My BFF's youngest son (hers and mine are 6 weeks apart) had night terrors, too. He would run around the house screaming, with a look on his face that would scare you. Several times, he snatched a knife out of the kitchen and wielded it at anyone in the room. They had to secure all the knives before going to bed at night. She (BFF) confided in me that she was afraid he was possessed! I tried to be supportive although I didn't think that was the cause. It's not that I don't believe in demonic possession, it's just that I had heard that night terrors can be disturbing, and was certain that was all it was ....until I saw his performance for myself.....ugh, I had a brief moment of doubt.

If he was possessed, he grew out of it.

Those in the San Francisco Bay Area probably remember Bob Wilkens and "Creature Features." I had a monster-fascinated kid I babysat and if it was a Saturday night, well, we were all set!

They were the first ones to show "Night of the Living Dead" on TV and that was the first horror movie that got to me...all that slurping.

WOW! I thought that "Creature Features" was a local thing! Here, it was hosted (I'm assuming that Bob Wilkins was the host in your area) by Charles Woods. He was a veteran pilot who had been severely burned and was grossly disfigured. He was active in politics and I think ran for several offices, including governor. I didn't miss the irony, even as a small child. Today, there would be mass protests!

Yes, but we will not mention anyone by name, right, BamaDude?

Im not going to forget to get a book of stamps when i go into town today. I still havnt mailed alot of yalls tomato seeds out yet. I will try to mail em out today. I planted yellow crookneck squash from a burpee seed packet. 1 of the plants is weired and is making a greener colored squash. Idk what variety it is but i loveit. I cooked 1 last night and it was waay better tasting and in texture than the crooknecks. I looked on burpee website and didnt see any that looked like the mutant squash that im growing. I will definately be saving some of the seeds for next year

Having trouble keeping up and I am a bit late on this one as the subject has changed already but .....

Don't laugh, my fear/freak out = moths! They give me the shivers, ugly little things and I hate the way they flutter around you, makes my skin crawl. A close second - Christmas Beetles. So called because they are in abundance around Christmas. Not unheard of to have 100's all over the screens, peering in at you, clicking. In the morning, when you go outside, there can be heaps of them on their backs struggling to turn over .. eew!

We have poisonous spiders, the most famous being the Red Back about which songs have been written .... 'Red Back on the Toilet Seat'.

The man bitten in this song was bitten by a female red-back. The male does not bite.
The red-back spider (Latrodectus hasseltii) one of Australia's most venomous spiders. It's found across Australia including Tasmania and is often found in outdoor dunnys (toilets), letter boxes, under logs and rocks and other dark areas. The red-back spider is most active at dusk and during the night.
Since the poison attacks the nervous system, it only takes a small amount of venom to cause serious illness. The red-back spider's painful bite can be fatal, especially to the young and elderly. An effective anti-venom was developed in 1956 and you should seek medical help immediately if bitten.
Your Christmas beetles sound like our June bugs. I think they're the same thing.

the two inch long sydney funnel web is a nasty spider

I used to work in ICU at the Royal North Shore Hospital od Sydney.

Victims would go into cirulatory shock and were so sick and sometimes died but when the antivenoum was finally produced, our ICU was quoted as saying it took the fun out of funnel web bites. The comment got him into trouble as being callous but for thrill seeking gung ho medical professional, trying to save somebody went from an all hands on deck situation to an iv injection.

There has not been a death since we gave that first dose in the early eighties

I read a story in International Wildlife magazine about poisonous animals and it listed the top 10. 8 of them are in Australia. Not the makings of a good tourism slogan.
our aussie red back is similar to a black widow

her is an old country song

Thanks for sharing the song. I liked it.
thanks for letting us in on the journey. Wise words. How did you know my microscope is on the way?
I have a microscope I bought used to do my own fecals but it's defective. The manufacturer told me to send it to them and they'll repair it. Just haven't gotten around to it.

1# - dreamcatchers. You need to tell them the story. I think it's the story, if told right, is really what works. Did for my daughter and then for hers.

Veterinary medicine is an educated guess at best, especially since the patient cannot *tell* you what's going on.....

(I realize the above post is not about vet med, btw. But people med is just a step removed...)

(added edit...)

That being said, I had one vet adventure with caponizing chickens. I wanted to do it, but didn't want the roo-let to feel it and so asked my vet (a close friend) for some anesthesia. Well, he was a large animal vet (always out for my stud farm) and so I'm in his office and he pulls out the Mercks manual, starts reading about avian anesthesia and asks "So these chickens, are they about the size of a pigeon?" Even the vet book didn't have sufficient poultry information....
Vets do have it tough. Doctors need to know about a single species or even just a single organ of that single species. There is a lot more pressure on doctors to get it right but people expect vets to be able to take care of any kind of animal. It doesn't work that way.

I love Ferris wheels but rarely go up on them, I can't stand the height. I have NEVER been on a roller coaster and never plan to be. At my age now, 60, if I tried, I'd probably die of a heart attack.
Ferris wheels are about the only think I'll ride. I've been on roller coasters and it wasn't fun - to me.

Now, while I was not paying a lot of attention, I did see an advertisement for what I believe was Sharknado 3? I got a brief glimpse of a shark flying through the air, chasing a car down a road? Lolz, I think I will pass on that one!
I saw the ad. It didn't look like anything I would waste my time on.

Oz I love the pic's and especially the playhouse!

Looks like they love it too.

Please, don't take this wrong, I had the utmost respect for this man, his service and sacrifices for us and our country, and his courage and determination to overcome his circumstances. He really was an incredible person, check out Wiki to see for yourself.

I just wanted to show you the irony of him being the host of Creature Features. He owned the TV station (I think) so I think maybe the joke was on us, but it left a lasting impression on me.
